For the last 2 years I have been tracking a generational change in the nature of software development, and I think I've finally decided where all of this turmoil is going to end up. It's good news, but not for everybody. seldo.com/posts/we-are-all-product-…

We are all Product Engineers now | Seldo.com
Agents are eating the software development lifecycle from the bottom up — code generation already gone, review and ops following fast. What remains is figuring out what people actually want, which can't be automated or scaled. That job is called product engineering, it pays $240k, and nobody's training for it.

New on the @posit.co blog: In my experience, fine tuning LLMs is more difficult and more expensive than I've seen it made out to be. In most cases, I'd recommend focusing your efforts on experimenting with a bunch of prompts and existing models. opensource.posit.co/blog/2026-09...

Earlier this summer, I got to share about teaching statistics with #Positron at eCOTS 2026! 💫 The video is now available to watch, and I think it was a great opportunity to reflect on how the tools we build can either support student discovery or shut it down. www.causeweb.org/cause/ecots/...

Exhibitor Demo | Teaching with Positron, a next-generation IDE for statistical computing
The best moments in a statistics classroom come from discovery, when a student wrestles a messy dataset into shape, sees a pattern emerge in a plot, and genuinely wonders why. In a world increasingly shaped by AI, the tools we put in front of students can either crowd out those moments or make room for them. Positron is a next generation data science IDE from Posit, the creators of RStudio, Quarto, Shiny, and the tidyverse. It offers first-class interactive support for both Python and R and is built to keep students close to their data.

If you are a visual editor user, then I think sticking with RStudio is the right call for the time being. Makes sense! It sounds like you are using that UI as a way to get into something like "Go To Definition". If you are interested in trying that out in Positron, give that a go!

Yes, after this change, you will need to sign into the **GitHub Copilot model provider** separately from (additionally to) signing into GitHub.
130
Julia Silge @juliasilge.com · 09/07/2026
The intention was that you would need to explicitly sign into the **GitHub Copilot model provider**, like it says there in those docs, not just any GitHub authentication at all. This would be different behavior than in VS Code, and we didn't quite get it right originally. We've got a fix in flight!
110
Julia Silge @juliasilge.com · 08/07/2026
In the meantime until our fix is out, you can opt out of Copilot completions by setting `"*": false` in your settings under `github.copilot.enable`:

There was a combination of upstream changes plus Positron changes that resulted in this behavior leaking through in Positron. We gained a lot by building on the Code OSS infrastructure but it also has had its challenges! We’re going to get this fixed and do a patch release.

Julia Silge @juliasilge.com · 08/07/2026
Thank you for highlighting this problem! In full disclosure, this was not intended. GitHub provides free tier Copilot completions in VS Code whenever you are authenticated to GitHub, even if you don't have a subscription, have not opted in, etc.
