I've had it, my sister too. My friend who i worked with couldn't sleep in a room with mirrors or he'd get the hag.

Oh the hag is very real in Newfoundland!

Charlie Heaton, by contrast, has gone so fully authentic Newf (only I'm allowed to use that word) that I'm honestly a little worried about him.

He is but he is the Newfoundland Fisherman Fantasy I never knew I had so we are going to cut him some slack.

Some Newfoundland accents are extremely Irish, straight out of Waterford/Wexford/Cork. But most are more of a blend of West Country and Irish, esp where this is meant to be set.

Charlie Heaton's accent is the best fake Newfoundland accent I've ever heard (not perfect, but good). The other fake ones are too Irish (Hartnett, Davis); but there are plenty of real ones because there are a lot of cast who are Newfoundlanders (i.e. Willow Kean, Joel Hynes).

I'm watching Below on Netflix and it's really wild to see how accurately they've captured the material culture of Newfoundland, and even some of the history. My mother's home was relocated like the one in the opening scene, though of course it wasn't pulled under by a giant sea monster.
three men pull a house across the water with a small boat.

We're at episode four and also loving it. The accuracy is rather uncanny.

Josh Harnetts accent isn't great but he is a very hot fisherman so we'll forgive him. You can spot the real accents but some of the fake ones aren't bad, esp Heaton's.

Watching it now and it is so authentically referenced it's blowing our minds. Charlie Heaton has gone deep in. It's wild. No idea if it's any good yet, like as a show, but it's pretty accurate in terms of Newfoundland.

I find something terribly sad (& ironic) about immortalizing an animal on a bank note whose population has been decimated by habitat loss, vehicles, etc. There were 30 million hedgehogs in 1950s Britain. There are fewer than 1 million now. Hedgehogs are going extinct. So we stick them on our money.

A fascinating article proving that Rosalind Franklin knew full well what she was seeing in image 51. And that James Watson is a sack of shit. Well, the article doesn't prove that. He proved that himself. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

...the solution is usually to do the goddam work. It's fascinating to watch how AI is reshaping but not at all reinventing the centuries-old conversation about the outsourcing, automation, and invisibilisation of care work and (to follow Verges) 'dirty work'. AI Bros are just so profoundly naive.

Most women will recognize this guy who thinks it's a flex to get AI to read to his baby. Men often want nothing to do with the tender & quotidian work of child-rearing (hashtag NotAllMen). Men often 'hack' solutions for traditionally female labour that aren't actually solutions at all because...

I know most people share this to demonstrate the horrors of police violence in the US, but I'm sharing it because Canadians and Australians ought to pause for thought too. We too often compare ourselves to the US when we should be comparing ourselves to the places that have 0.0.

Because of disruption at kings x, I had to cycle to Liverpool Street for my train and I need to ask... do they literally move the hoardings surrounding Liverpool Street Station every two weeks? Or are the gods trolling me and moving the actual station?

Right now, UKRI is not using AI for direct grant apps. They are trialling from 10 september a retrospective test to see if AI will make same decisions as humans for past apps. OP it's talking about an indirect funding app. But this means: not to late to protest/ change?.... (not hopeful)

Doing this to a teenage child is bad parenting for them and for the parent on so many levels, as the original op-ed itself demonstrates ('spin out? 'panic'? 'can breathe again'??) But when your son is nineteen--an adult by all legal definitions--doing this is not parenting at all. It is stalking.
