Slightly secretive Sydneysider. 🎥 🎶 🍳 🐕 I know a tiny amount about many things so I guess that makes me a scatty fox rather than a deep-thinking hedgehog.

I think the light displays are new since I used to stay there. FWIW it’s not a particularly good hotel - I preferred the nearby Mandarin Oriental, which is older but was better run.

We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars on submarines and paying down debt but apparently we can’t afford to paint Wollongong hospital.

I had the theatrical poster for that on my wall for ages. My recollection is that the movie, like the poster, looked stylish and well-composed. But it didn’t stick with the audience in the screening I went to. I think I should probably re-visit it.

This thread has some unintentionally funny elisions.
David Milner says: “We should have eaten the capitalists back when they first decided their business model was "everything breaks after two and a bit years"”

Several post later caitbdky.bsky.social says: ”They’re regularly half price at Coles and Woolies, plus a few other retailers. Oral B Electric toothbrush.”

Great cast in “Angel Face” (1953) but the large slab of courtroom blather in the middle sucks a lot of the air out of it. Totally worth it for Robert Mitchum. Tourneur’s “Out Of The Past” (1947) and Laughton’s “The Night of the Hunter” (1955) remain my favourite performances of his.

The Conspirators (1944). Serviceable but uninspired show in which Paul Henreid demonstrates he’s no Humphrey Bogart. Hedy Lamarr, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre rescue it from ignominy.

I’ve managed to see two Kyle Gallner movies in a week, by accident. He’s got great presence and can certainly act but he needs better material and a role that allows him to play someone who has a brain. The movies were Carolina Caroline (3.5 stars) and The Passenger (3 stars).

Enshittification continues… I may actually cancel. At home I mostly play discs or run off a Swinsian instance on an old iMac wired to our receiver. The only time I use actual Apple Music is either in the car or on the train. May be time to break out the old iPod. I wonder how long it will last.
Notice from Apple that my subscription to Apple Music is increasing by $2.00/month to $15.00.

Good lord I have a lot of old stuff in my home office. (I have no idea why this survived more than 3 decades. It was a fun night out in the midst of a Georgia Winter but IIRC Neil Finn had a very bad cold. Peter Buck had to lend him a guitar, because his was missing somehow).

“INTERACTING WITH POLICE
Police talk to people at protests to gather information that could be used to surveil
or criminalise protest-goers and organisers. Be careful when speaking to police,
even if they approach you in a casual manner and “just want to have a chat”
.
You are only required to provide your name and address to police if:
you are under arrest
they intend to give you a move on order
you are in a temporarily restricted area
they suspect you can assist in the investigation of a serious offence
You are not required to give police any other identifying info that they may ask
you for, like your date of birth.
You are otherwise not required to speak to police or answer any questions they
may ask you.
If you do not wish to answer police questions you can say 'no comment' or
direct them to speak with the organisers’ police liaison.
It’s a good idea to record your interactions with police in case they escalate,
police provide false information, or you would like to refer to it later. You can
record interactions by filming them, using the voice memo app on your phone or
taking notes.”

Useful information. The hell with Chris Minns.
“POLICE MOVE ON ORDERS
NSW Police can issue move on orders at protests only if they believe on
reasonable grounds that it is necessary to deal with a serious risk to safety,
or if you are obstructing traffic and do not have authorisation from police
under the Form 1 system. This includes obstructing pedestrian traffic on a
footpath.
If a move on order is given because traffic is being obstructed, that order can only be
given to those people who are obstructing traffic.
When giving a move on order police must:
provide you their name and station;
give the reason they have issued the order; and
warn you that failing to comply with the order is an offence.
If you fail to comply with a move on order you may be fined $220. carries a separate maximum fine of $440.”
