🧵5/5 This suggests that gaze shifts provide temporal anchors that help structure the sequential reactivation of memories within an episode. Gaze shifts structure what we see by sequentially sampling our environment, but they may also help structure the sequential reactivation of what we remember.

🧵4/5 This link showed up in the brain activity, too: only correctly executed gaze shifts were accompanied by significant neural reactivation of the associated image memory. Even more strikingly, this reactivation was time-locked to gaze-shift onset, beginning with the start of the movement.

🧵3/5 During subsequent retrieval tests, recalled gaze-shift sequences served as a direct behavioral readout of memory performance: if participants forgot a specific gaze shift, they also tended to forget the associated image.

🧵2/5 We investigated whether gaze shifts (head & eye movements as major exploratory actions in humans) structure the neural reactivation of sequential memories. Participants learned multiple action sequences by pairing images with distinct gaze shifts, while we recorded EEG and motion-tracking data

🧵1/5 We constantly engage with our environment through sequences of actions and these actions shape how episodic memories are formed. But how do they interact with the neural dynamics underlying memory retrieval?

Episodic memory forms through action: gaze shifts sequentially sample experience as it unfolds 👀🏞️ 🧠 But actions may also help organize how the brain reactivates episodic memories! 👀🧠💭 🏞️ Check out our new preprint 👇 doi.org/10.64898/202... 🎉 @tobiasstaudigl.bsky.social & Aditya Chowdhury 👇🧵

Check out our new paper! 🧠 Me, @xiongbowu.bsky.social and @fuentemilla.bsky.social review how reactivation at the end of events support memory formation and propose it serves multiple functions from preventing interference to helping preserve temporal continuity! ✨ www.cell.com/trends/cogni...

Neural reactivation supports memory formation when events end
Memory routinely transforms continuous experience into discrete episodes that support flexible retrieval. We propose that these structured representations are established via rapid neural reactivation...

I am so grateful to my supervisor @tobiasstaudigl.bsky.social my office buddies and everyone who supported me through this chapter. Excited for what's next: finding a postdoc in human brain data & cognition, curious about all the ways to stimulate the brain! Know of any opportunities? #PostdocSearch

Finally a Dr.🎓(well, once my certificate is printed 😄) A few weeks ago, I defended my thesis, and shortly after, graduated from GSN @lmu.de! I learned so much on this journey, not only about how action structures episodic memory (preprint coming soon!) but that persistence is key😄 #PhD #Neuroscience

Thrilled to share our new #preprint, and super proud of @zednud.bsky.social and our work on eye–brain dynamics during eyes-closed rest and sleep! Also excited to share that Zach started his PhD with me recently! 🎉 Lots of ideas and cool work ahead. Follow him on Bluesky and check out his thread! 🧵

Can we study MTL ripples non-invasively? New preprint! We show that source-resolved MEG tracks ripple-like activity during sleep that: • localizes to the MTL • follows the canonical SO–spindle hierarchy • matches an iEEG benchmark • indexes memory reactivation www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Non-invasive tracking of ripple-like activity during human sleep using MEG
Hippocampal ripples are considered a key mechanism of sleep-dependent memory consolidation. In humans, however, their direct investigation has relied on invasive recordings from patients with epilepsy...

🚨 New preprint alert! Excited to share our latest work on alpha/beta activity, eye movements, and memory. Across 4 experiments combining scalp EEG/iEEG with eye tracking, we show that alpha/beta activity directly reflects eye movements, and only indirectly relates to memory. 👇 Highlights (1/7):

📢 New preprint from the lab: We are very excited to report the discovery of an oscillation in the Central Thalamus using rare direct recordings of human thalamic electrophysiology. The novel oscillation is tightly coupled to specific, natural states of consciousness.🧵
