Two tiny #Trachurus (Mediterranean horse mackerel) shelter beneath a nearly stranded #Cotylorhiza tuberculata on the rocky southern #Istrian shore. Juvenile symbionts, they feed on parasites in exchange for protection, leaving only in their host’s final moments.

#Hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus among coastal red algae in the North #Adriatic Sea. Often in banded dye-murex shells, revealed by the tips of the legs only. Vivid purple and lilac patches on the shell are due to various red algae. Spirorbis worms complete the nice consortia!

Made in Germany - finished on the Adriatic! A container has been colonized by a dozen barnacles, otherwise obligate associates of sea turtles. Chelonibia caretta is an acorn barnacle commensal on turtles. The container is more of an unusual substitute for driftwood, not the host.
