Chasing the perfect ceviche. My story in the latest issue of Perhokalastus (Fly fishing) magazine. 11 pages from a solo hike in northern Swedish wilderness, fishing one of the most restricted Arctic Char waters. Having read the mag already as a teen in the 90s made this one special.

Magazine spread, text with photo of a trail leading to a mountain in the wilderness.

Magazine spread, on the left: large photo of Arctic Char next to fresh juniper berries and pieces of ice. On the right page: Text with photos of wilderness cooking, plate of arctic char cheviche, sizzling pan.

to finish a screenplay, i must become a dark and surly sweatpants hermit for a minimum of 3 days. the outward-facing writer can write act I & II. bitter unwashed pajama monster is the only creature who can finish the job.

Starting 2026 with good news - Phoenix Television has acquired broadcast and online rights to Hatching Eagles, bringing it to new audiences across Asia. Hello to viewers in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore!

“..you should do your best to watch ‘Hatching Eagles’. It left me with a bunch of questions and mixed feelings, but you should first take it at face value. Can a child be taught anything in 10,0000 hours?" Substack find. Thanks Mike. See my film on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Youtube Movies.

Finished one, started another. This story’s been brewing for some years. I wrote it earlier as a screenplay, now it’s becoming a book. Pantser 👋 writing this way feels different, but for now, it’s rather nice to have a framework. #booksky #writing

While the world feels crazy, maybe my doc can offer a break. Watch it on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, or Yt Movies. It’s a story about the quickest-ever rise to the Olympics, starting from zero. A reminder that each of us has so much potential to learn new things. www.jukkatallinen.com/films/hatchi...

This is the way. I keep at least three copies - one on a fast work drive, an 8-bay NAS with redundancy, and at least one external drive (preferably offsite). I used to use the BM Multidock, but as my workflow became more mobile, I switched to portable drives.

Aimo Koivunen, a Finnish WW2 soldier, was the first known case of a combat drug overdose. Fleeing Soviets, he accidentally took 30 Meth pills instead of one. He skied 250 miles with a heart rate of 200 BPM, escaped capture, ate a raw bird, lay wounded for a week - and lived to tell the tale.

Tested both and went with the M2 Max 14". Pretty sure I'll stick with the 14" from now on — love the portability. The 16" just felt too big. It replaced my desktop, but I’ve been enjoying the freedom of editing in random places for a change. Cutting in #Resolve

Slightly off-topic, but if a one-page website (profile, landing, or portfolio) suits your needs, I recommend Carrd. I used to run hosted WordPress sites, then two Squarespace sites (work and personal), but switched to Carrd. For $19/year, you get access to custom domain support and other extras.

It might be worthwhile to build a good relationship with a Motion Designer. The need is often somewhat repetitive (titles, l3rds) and shouldn't incur a massive cost. It used to be my job, and I still make all the graphics I need. I was always happy to do quick gigs while working on longer projects.

Jukka Tallinen @jukkatallinen.com · 08/12/2024

It’s excellent! If you haven’t tried it, I can highly recommend Poulet au vinaigre - another French classic. It’s a nice learning process, adjusting the acidity to suit your taste.

Playing the drums in my youth and making music later on have shaped the way I edit. I tend to think of cuts as snares, kicks, toms, and cymbals, building up into a beat. It usually happens unconsciously.

I’m always amazed by how, on a deeper level, writing and documentary editing feel so connected. Especially editing writing - it has this strange similarity to cutting a doc. Finding the rhythm, shaping the narrative, knowing when to let things breathe. Lucky to be doing both. #postchat #writing

I once directed a TVC featuring four cats having dinner. Lesson learned. I did cover all the bases and hired a Roto artist and his cats for the shoot. Never has a dolly shot turned into post-zoom so quickly in any of my projects. #postchat

True. The more I wrote, the more I saw the overlap — especially in docs. Writing improved my editing, and editing sharpened my writing. I can warmly encourage all editors to try their hand at writing, even as a side quest. It’s oddly satisfying to craft a poem on a lazy Sunday. #writing #editing
