Surely it was only a few seconds, but it felt like an age, and Yuki's senses came back in pieces; aching lungs, pounding heart, an emptiness. The last thing to return was his sight, and when it did he saw Tohru's face: cheeks red, eyes wide and so very, very dark, looking right at him.
She was kneeling by Kyo, one hand— just fingertips— on his shoulder. The modest, practical dress she wore to work in summer, hair up but coming undone; she was beautiful.
"D-D-D-Do…" She paused, swallowed. Inhaled. Her eyes went to Kyo, hand moving further. "Do you want this?"
The glow in Kyo's eyes had dimmed. Still, he was tense and somehow hurting. "I, I need it, I feel like I can't breathe—" A moan slipped out when her hand reached the back of his neck.
"Do *you* want this?"
Yuki's breath caught. Now she was looking at him.
How could he possibly answer that? When he was dreaming but not asleep, when that new emptiness kept growing and every part of him ached and the wanting was all the worse for it?

Sonja dislikes waiting less when there is something to do, however. A weapon to sharpen; something to whittle; staking out a target. Here, camped for the night, with only bare necessities and with all menial tasks done, there's nothing to do.
Except stare daggers at Conan as if that will make his fever break any sooner.
Yes, Sonja dislikes waiting. But at least she's capable of it. Unlike this brute, this rock-for-brains-- if act first, think later were a person, it would be Conan. Stupid man.
She sighs and tilts her gaze toward the starry sky. Heaven save her from this watch... No, heaven's concerned with far greater and more incomprehensible things than she.
It's penance, she supposes. For daring to claim she knew this terrain so well, for allowing Conan's usual blithe brusque manner to placate her into not checking him for injury after she saw the blood trailing from his arm. In hindsight, the yellow-green razon-thin fronds of the one plant compared to the darker green of its easily mistaken neighbor are obvious. A naive mistake.
A deadly one, if Conan were not Conan. His bulk and strength and sheer force of will mitigate the poison enough to keep him alive.
But not well, she's reminded; by his soft groan, the heat of his fever obvious in the balmy night.
Idiot.

Dogs are proof we live in a good and loving universe. Dogs getting cancer is the proof that we don’t.
I hate this. I don’t want her to go. To be gone. It’s enough to make you never want to get another dog again. We will, of course. George Carlin was right — life is just a series of dogs. But the pain of this is so hard, so deep. This one fucking hurt, man. I feel like I’m dying inside. And yet it’s what we owe them at the end. It’s part of the price at the start. You make that deal the first day you take them into your house. Whatever it costs you then, it’ll cost you this at the end, and pay this price because it’s a mercy they can’t do for themselves — and ironically, often enough a mercy we can’t do for ourselves for each other, either, as people. But for them we can do it. And we have to do it. Even though it feels like the worst thing it is the best, most necessary thing. They give us so much. So this is the thing we owe.
