Patriarchy doesn’t survive solely because of what men do. It also survives because its beliefs get woven into our relationships, our parenting, our families, our faith communities, our politics, our ideas about sex, and even the ways women relate to other women. Women did not create patriarchy, but we can examine the places where we have been taught to participate in it. Every time we tell a girl she’s “fast” while excusing boys.Every time we dismiss boys emotional needs and call it toughness.Every time we protect a family member instead of believing a girl or boy who says they were harmed. Every time we shame another woman for her sexuality, body, ambition, choices, divorce, motherhood, or lack thereof. Every time we remain silent about beliefs or policies that restrict other women’s autonomy because they don’t affect us. Every time we normalize patriarchal beliefs in our intimate relationships. Every time we teach women that being chosen by a man matters more than choosing themselves. Every time we expect women to carry the emotional, domestic, relational, and caregiving labor because its expected of us. Every time women police other women into compliance with rules designed to keep women smaller. We feed the system. What if we became increasingly unavailable for relationships, traditions, gender roles, family dynamics, and beliefs that require women’s subordination? What if we stopped measuring our liberation by whether we personally were comfortable and started caring about the freedom of women whose lives look nothing like ours? We cannot individually dismantle patriarchy but we find ways to not participate in it. XOXO 🩷🤎@the.healingvibeYours in Liberation
