I get a lot of scolding about my clues from people who say they're Ximeneans, but then I look at their grids and shake my head …
A passage from Ximenes' "Art of the Crossword" with the following quote highlighted: "… because it leads towards what I want to make the first principle of crossword diagram composition, that at least half the letters of every word should be checked. I consider that a five-letter word with only its second and fourth letters checked is unfair to the solver, …"

The fools! If you just cut the cube up into a stairstep pattern, every across always flows into a down or vice versa. No backwards entry needed!
A terrible mock-up of a crossword on a cube that has been unfolded into a stair-step. It's got a lot of two-letter words in it and probably other problems as well.

If you have a triangle whose corners have integer coordinates, you can compute its exact area as the number of integer-coordinate points inside the triangle, plus 1/2 of the number of integer coordinate points along the edges, plus 1/2. Here that's 6+1/2(1)+1/2=7. Neat, huh?
A triangle on graph paper with vertices at (1,1), (5,3), and (2,5). There are six grid-line intersections inside the triangle and one along the bottom edge.
