Super excited to be at #EuroPython2026 but a bit alarmed by the Programme flames 🔥🔥

When I was a kid, my Gran bought a toaster. On the packaging, it said "With 8-bit microchip!" I've been using a clockwork toaster for the past 22 years with no complaints. Seriously, if AI doesn't improve your product, don't add AI to it.
A Russell Hobbs Microchip "Country Style" toaster.

The thing that isn't being reported is that the survey was written in such a biased way it was actually VERY DIFFICULT to object. If the survey had been well-written, the results would be even worse.

I've been using GoLand and Junie, JetBrains AI coding assistant. GoLand's Productivity Guide shows that I haven't really been using the features of my IDE at all! I think in a real-world project I'd be using a combination of Junie for the boring stuff and hand coding the interesting pieces.
A window showing that I've been using GoLand for 2 days, but code completion has only saved me from typing 1 character, and there's a list of IDE features that I have never used.

My friend @martiell.bsky.social wanted a picture of an angry porg, so he typed "cross porg" into ChatGPT ...

Ever run `brew list` and think, "what's that?" The following script will print out every package you've installed with `brew`, along with the package description. gist.github.com/judy2k/c4396...
A CLI screenshot, showing the output of the linked gist. It prints every brew package name, along with their descriptions, in a nicely formatted table.

Learning the difference between knit and woven fabric at the Open Hardware Summit 😁
Knit is single threaded and woven is multi-threaded. It's a programming joke!

I am gradually recovering from the running injury that I have not previously mentioned on BlueSky. Don't run a Half Marathon with only 2 weeks' training, kids. I was smiling in this photo because I was standing still.

But my back jelly is already moist! I feel like they've misunderstood my affliction entirely.

I ran the #EMF2025 Half Marathon today! Ow.
Sweaty pink-faced man wearing sunglasses and a cap. He appears to be running I was just, which is ill-advised.

So ... just for clarification, would you prefer to push or pull me along the route?
A galvanised wheelbarrow, it is nice and shiny and silver.A handcart, designed to be pulled by a handle on a pivot. It is an excellent shade of British racing green, and it has pneumatic tires!

One of the nice little details in fish shell is that listing files correctly orders filenames with embedded sequence numbers. (For what it's worth, you also get this with exa/eza if you don't want to switch your shell)

Infauxmation! I like it.
Give me seven made up words to describe the awful semi-fictional, pointless content produced by LLMs.

Here are seven made-up words to describe that kind of content:

1. Botfiller - Generic, soulless text that exists only to take up space.

2. Synthcruft - Artificially generated junk that sounds real but lacks depth.

3. Verblage - A mash of meaningless words designed to sound profound.

4. Spamphoria - The illusion of useful content that's actually just empty fluff.

5. Altropea - Repetitive, predictable nonsense full of clichés.

6. Churnologue - A long, winding block of Al-generated babble.

7. Infauxmation - Text that pretends to be insightful but says nothing new.

I am torturing an LLM by forcing it to tell me its favourite muppet any time it wants to multiply two numbers together. The answer it gives is Kermit, just showing the limitations of today's large language models. (Obviously the correct answer is Animal)
A short python function that multiplies two numbers together. It has a third parameter, called "favourite muppet," and the docstring " Provide three parameters: a and b (the operands), and the name of your favourite muppet."

A page of Rust code, typeset using a font called "Comic Shanns Mono." It's a casual font, meant to replicate hand-drawn type in speech bubbles, so it looks a little like it's been scrawled with a felt-tip pen.

You know how Command-F in the MacOS Finder searches *the whole computer* by default? You can change that. Finder > Settings ...
A screenshot of the OSX Finder Settings Window. I've highlighted a menu at the bottom, labelled "when performing a search." I've selected the option "search the current folder," because I barely ever want to search the whole computer, which is the default option for reasons that escape me.
