Some are small enough to tuck onto a shelf. Others make a larger statement in a room. All of them are perfect companions together, a daily reminder that both in nature & in life, what feels like falling apart might just be the start of something beautiful…

Last chance. My Butterfly Collection closes at midnight tonight, only 15 artworks remain. Each piece is a celebration of transformation and hope, inspired by a childhood dream of having a butterfly collection that took decades to finally come true. #ButterflyArt #judithmonroeart #mixedmediaartworks

These two Butterfly Collection pieces have settled into a collector’s home, and they’re helping turn it into a quiet retreat. I’m so grateful that something made in my studio gets to be part of someone else’s everyday life. #butterflyart #natureart #mixedmediaart

Then I learned what actually happens inside a chrysalis. The caterpillar doesn't gradually shift into something new. It completely liquefies first. A real, total, hot mess in the middle of it, before it becomes a butterfly. That changes everything about what butterflies represent to me…

I'm proud of this work. It feels a little weird to say that out loud, but it's true. I never actually planned on making butterfly art. I just wanted a butterfly collection & for a long time that felt like an unfinished childhood dream… #ButterflyArt #judithmonroeart #artcollecting

A caterpillar doesn't gradually shift into something new. It completely liquefies first, then reforms into a butterfly. Butterflies aren't just beautiful. They're proof that complete transformation is possible, even when the process looks like falling apart.

People ask me why butterflies show up so much in my work. I've always loved them. I find them on the trail & in the garden. I learn their names. I stop & watch them longer than most people do. Then I learned what actually happens inside a chrysalis… #ButterflyArt #judithmonroeart #Hopeful

A butterfly doesn't gradually transform inside a chrysalis. It first liquefies completely, becomes just liquid, before it reforms into something new. Falling apart, it turns out, is sometimes exactly what transformation requires. #ButterflyArt #judithmonroeart #Transformation

It started with finding them on the trail - butterflies that had already lived their full lives, too beautiful to walk past. Then I discovered I could source specimens online from sanctuaries working to protect wild populations. And before I knew it, I had all kinds of butterflies.

I collect them because butterflies mean something. They go through a transformation so complete that the caterpillar literally liquefies inside the chrysalis before it reforms as something entirely new. That's not a metaphor, that's actually what happens.

Judith Monroe @judithmonroe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
