I'm planning on spending this warm rainy evening curled up with Caper the dog and Closer the book by @miriamgershow.bsky.social. Perfection.

Caper, my white gray, and brown mini-poodle, stretches out on a blue quilted bedrspread and looks directly into the camera with her big brown eyes while "holding" the novel Closer by Miriam Gershow in one of her paws. The novel cover, in bright red, pine green and black, is a drawing of a sun porch looking out over a distant city.

Madison, WI--just a sliver of the crowd.

A throng of protestors (backs to camera) with Madison, WI city buildings in background and gray clouds overhead. Three legible signs: Freedom, Recall R. Johnson and I Bet Canada Feels Like They Live in an Apartment Over a Meth Lab.

The smallest generous impulses make me want to cry these days. Tonight, I was stopped behind this car tonight & wanted to get out, rap on the driver's side & say thank you. Instead I did the far creepier thing: I photographed the car.

Close-up of the back of a red Jeep stopped at a Wisconsin intersection. Sticker in rear window says "I hope something good happens to you today."

NEW: The board president of a small WV nonprofit says they haven't received their HHS funding since the Trump/Musk budget freeze. They had to lay off 3 of 5 employees on Friday. An 86-yr-old woman is counting on them to take her dialysis tomorrow. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

9. I understand from our Office Manager, however, that as of Sunday,
February 2, no funds have been deposited to our bank account. We have checked our accounts multiple times a day since January 29, but no funds have been transmitted. We have received no information or explanation from the Administration for Community Living about the interruption in funds.
10. In short: we have received no federal funds since the OMB Freeze Memo was issued. Our Center had enough money to meet payroll on Friday, January 31, and to cover outstanding bills. But we did not have enough money on hand to cover another two-week pay period at full staffing.
11. Thus, on Friday, January 31, the Board of Directors voted to lay off three of our five employees and drastically reduce services to our customers. This presented a dire situation for our customers, who have immediate needs.
12. For example, on Monday, February 3, we are scheduled to take an
86-year-old woman to dialysis treatments (which we do for her every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Our agency is her only way to get to these life-sustaining appointments.
