Interestingly, Marx does not seem to think surplus-labor and exploited labor are synonymous. Surplus-labor will continue under communism, rather than considering it expanded necessary labor. Or maybe these terms start to break down in meaning outside of class society.
This is also the only portion of surplus-value and surplus-product, and thus of surplus-labour, which would continue to exist, outside of that portion serving for accumulation, and hence expansion of the process of reproduction, even after the abolition of the capitalist mode of production. This, of course, presupposes that the portion regularly consumed by direct producers does not remain limited to its present minimum. Apart from surplus-labour for those who on account of age are not yet, or no longer, able to take part in production, all labour to support those who do not work would cease.

This naturally ties in with decolonial efforts. Many socialists understand it is wrong for, say, England to rule over India, seeing the need to break up this power. They might even want to break off Scotland and Wales. They have been less supportive of the need to break England itself.

The state is rejected for both its artificial unity and artificial separation. It forces many peoples into the same structure, while also dividing them from people they might share more in common with in other states or territories.

Anarchist federalism follows from the administration of things taking place without the government of persons. Federations find their natural limits in the share historical characteristics that forge a people (rather than state imposition), and unite the globe in the confederation of free peoples.

"Nationalism is a reactionary current in the national liberation struggle, a reactionary current that simply cannot deliver any meaningful freedom for the working class and peasantry of the oppressed nationality." - Lucien van der Walt theanarchistlibrary.org/library/alfr...
Nationalism versus National Liberation

What these reactionary currents all share is the ideology of nationalism: the ideology that maintains that class struggle is irrelevant, that oppressed workers and peasants must join hands with their “own” exploiters and aspirant exploiters, to establish a national capitalism and national State. Their aim is “national independence,” meaning that “local” capitalists will replace “foreign” capitalists, “local” generals the “foreign” generals, “local” government officials the “foreign” officials.

Nationalism is a reactionary current in the national liberation struggle, a reactionary current that simply cannot deliver any meaningful freedom for the working class and peasantry of the oppressed nationality. Nationalism is a reactionary current that sacrifices the masses on the altar of the elite.

As Bakunin said, national liberation must be achieved “as much in the economic as in the political interests of the masses.” If the struggle is taken over by “ambitious intent to set up a powerful State” and “carried out without the people,” it will become hijacked by the “privileged class” and degenerate into a “retrogressive, disastrous, counter-revolutionary movement.”

Communism is the real movement, rather than a state of affairs, in that the germ of communism already exists in proletarian class struggle. But communism as the dominant mode of production is only achieved when the present state of affairs of class society is abolished.

Communism is a higher form of society, freely developing our human powers as an end in itself. This takes place outside of the workplace, where we address our expanding material necessities. The freedom of the associated worker enables a greater freedom beyond. www.marxists.org/archive/marx...
The actual wealth of society, and the possibility of constantly expanding its reproduction process, therefore, do not depend upon the duration of surplus-labour, but upon its productivity and the more or less copious conditions of production under which it is performed. In fact, the realm of freedom actually begins only where labour which is determined by necessity and mundane considerations ceases; thus in the very nature of things it lies beyond the sphere of actual material production. Just as the savage must wrestle with Nature to satisfy his wants, to maintain and reproduce life, so must civilised man, and he must do so in all social formations and under all possible modes of production. With his development this realm of physical necessity expands as a result of his wants; but, at the same time, the forces of production which satisfy these wants also increase. Freedom in this field can only consist in socialised man, the associated producers, rationally regulating their interchange with Nature, bringing it under their common control, instead of being ruled by it as by the blind forces of Nature; and achieving this with the least expenditure of energy and under conditions most favourable to, and worthy of, their human nature. But it nonetheless still remains a realm of necessity. Beyond it begins that development of human energy which is an end in itself, the true realm of freedom, which, however, can blossom forth only with this realm of necessity as its basis. The shortening of the working-day is its basic prerequisite.

Some argue that a commitment to secularism and freedom requires we keep our religious views entirely separate from our ideas of justice. But it is more that religious citations should coincide with the values of a free society. We object to anti-choice people citing religion, but not to John Brown.

Marx's favorite illustration for exploitation is the corvée system of slave laborer. The worker is forced to dedicate part of the year working their lord's land for free, clearly distinguishing their unpaid labor in time and space, while capitalism mixes them up. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corv%C3...

Incredible Marx quote explaining his idea of historical materialism, as well as pushing against the more deterministic interpretations. I don't think I've seen anyone cite this before. Probably because it is buried deep in Capital Volume 3 www.marxists.org/archive/marx...
The specific economic form, in which unpaid surplus-labour is pumped out of direct producers, determines the relationship of rulers and ruled, as it grows directly out of production itself and, in turn, reacts upon it as a determining element. Upon this, however, is founded the entire formation of the economic community which grows up out of the production relations themselves, thereby simultaneously its specific political form. It is always the direct relationship of the owners of the conditions of production to the direct producers — a relation always naturally corresponding to a definite stage in the development of the methods of labour and thereby its social productivity — which reveals the innermost secret, the hidden basis of the entire social structure and with it the political form of the relation of sovereignty and dependence, in short, the corresponding specific form of the state. This does not prevent the same economic basis — the same from the standpoint of its main conditions — due to innumerable different empirical circumstances, natural environment, racial relations, external historical influences, etc. from showing infinite variations and gradations in appearance, which can be ascertained only by analysis of the empirically given circumstances.

Kropotkin further accurately predicted this as a matter of necessity for a revolutionary commune under blockade. Decentralization was tied to self-sufficiency, which the USSR certainly needed to learn.

JudgeSabo 🏴 @judgesabo.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I think this is because, for Marx, centralization was really about mass cooperation, in contrast to disconnected "isolated" producers. For Kropotkin, centralization is specialization, and we decentralize as more people can do more things instead of relying on one central monopoly.
142
JudgeSabo 🏴 @judgesabo.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
While Marx emphasized the centralization of industry, Kropotkin emphasized its decentralization in a way that actually fulfills Marx's core hope for a full and well-rounded development, destroying the rigid capitalist division of labor.

Marx talks more about his thoughts on colonies in Capital Volume 3 in the section I'm reading now on ground-rent and land-ownership. It is interesting that the indigenous population does not seem to factor into his analysis much at all. He mostly talks about colonies as big empty places to farm.
Since even the cases considered above — where, under the capitalist mode of production, investments of capital in the land may actually take place without yielding rent — do not contribute to the solution of our problem, so much less does reference to colonial conditions. The criterion establishing a colony as a colony — we are referring here only to true agricultural colonies — is not merely the prevailing vast area of fertile land in a natural state. It is rather the circumstance that this land has not been appropriated, has not been subjected to private ownership. Herein lies the enormous difference, as regards the land, between old countries and colonies: the legal or actual non-existence of landed property, as Wakefield [35] correctly remarks, and as Mirabeau père, the physiocrat, and other elder economists, had discovered long before him. It is quite immaterial here whether the colonists simply appropriate the land, or whether they actually pay to the state, in the form of a nominal land price, a fee for a valid legal title to the land. It is also immaterial that the colonists already settled there may be the legal owners of the land. In fact, landed property constitutes no limitation here to the investment of capital — and also of labour without capital; the appropriation of some of the land by the colonists already established there does not prevent the newcomers from employing their capital or their labour upon new land. Therefore, when it is necessary to investigate the influence of landed property upon the prices of products of the land and upon rent — in those cases where landed property restricts land as an investment sphere of capital — it is highly absurd to speak of free bourgeois colonies where, in agriculture, neither the capitalist mode of production exists, nor the form of landed property corresponding to it — which, in fact, does not exist at all.
