A landscape image of an Eurasian Eagle Owl. I’d love to be posting a photo of one I’d taken in the wild but that is unlikely to happen. This is Pumpkin and Pumpkin lives at Muncaster Castle in Cumbria. The centre is very well run and works tirelessly in both education and conservation, and all the birds seem very well cared for.

In this photo the bird is on the left vertical third of the image perched on its large water bowl. It had just taken up water and was rising up again to swollen it down. Its beck is slightly open and its eyes half closed. We can see just a hint of part of the bird reflected in the water.

This vulture is called Mouse and is one of a few at the hawk and owl centre in Muncaster Castle. The centre do great work in helping conserve this amazing species. Vultures are critically endangered, which is a worry as they are an important part of the ecosystem.

Here’s a couple of things Muncaster says about them. Vultures fill a vital ecological niche. They are obligate scavengers – this means they have a diet entirely made up of carrion (dead animals). By consuming a carcass, vultures can eliminate it as a potential harbour for disease and bacteria. Vultures are also an important indicator species – it means that the health of vulture populations is a biological reflection on the health of the ecosystem.

There are many more of these poles behind it with boats in amongst it. In the distance stands La Salute, this is on the top right third. It’s not long after sunrise and faint orange and yellows can be seen in the clear pale blue sky. On the closest, prominent pole is a gull, it faces left and has its wings outstretched as it prepares to lift off the post and into the sky.

A redwing amongst the branches of a crab apple tree. The branches are bare except for the remaining red fruit. The back drop is green and brown a mix of deciduous and evergreen trees. Across the bottom of the image is the top of a pergola, it wasn’t placed there for the purpose but does work well to support the branches when they’re laden with fruit. The bird on the bottom right third, quite small in the picture but the hole image tells the story without the need for the bird to be more prominent.

A mallard on the Cromford Canal. The bird is mid way up the image and fairly central. It has a clear reflection and a gently wake behind it. The top of the image is the canal side, at this point its blocks of stone with a little moss growing on them. The water is very still.

These four images are for the bird of the day challenge, which is four photo with 1, 2, 3 and 4 birds of the same species in each. Mine are all landscape orientated images of Siskin. This one has a Siskin taking flight from a branch.

Here we have two Siskin one on a seed feeder the other in flight approaching it. The background is all foliage.
