We identify three endogenous drivers behind the rise of the reactionary mainstream: (1) economic and geopolitical disruptions (2) the ideological reconfiguration of liberal traditions (3) new class alliances This points to alternative ways of confronting democratic regression.

Juan Roch @juanroch.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
We first ask a basic but often neglected question: what is the mainstream? After discussing previous literature we argue that the mainstream is a historically contingent cross-party coalition that serves to stabilise the party system and sustain hegemony at the social level.

Juan Roch @juanroch.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Our main argument: research on the mainstreaming of the far right usually treats reactionary ideas as external imports adopted by mainstream parties under electoral pressure. We instead focus on the endogenous ideological and institutional dynamics of the mainstream itself.

This is why polarisation is such an unhelpful term as it encourages this kind of horseshoe theorising Starmer's vision may sound grownup but it's one where politics should be in between democracy and authoritarianism, racism and anti-racism, transphobia and trans rights and fascism and anti-fascism
I will also fight against the extremes in politics on the right and the left, parties who want to tear our country apart.
