We are very happy that during the last week Torsten and Florian from ELMITEC GmbH installed in our LEEM a TVIPS GmbH XF216 camera for direct electron detection, funded by the Comunidad de Madrid. The microscope use is offered through the labrg.iqf.csic.es at the @iqf-csic.bsky.social .

Proud of Spain. There is a 10 hours really bad blackout: crime goes down, people help each other, enjoy the afternoon if possible.

Ok, stupidity reaches a new level. What will the world look like in three years? At least, in the 30s they increased tariffs in a misplaced attempt to recover from a crisis. This time, stupidity created the crisis. open.substack.com/pub/paulkrug...

Too true. I am tired of NY Times saying that Zelensky did not handle Trump correctly. But I guess they said the same of the Checoslovaquian president at the Munich accords.

I understand that what would be most useful for Ucrania at this stage is for Europe to defend the ucranian skies with their planes. Other than material support and to help the ucranian UAV and war production as much as possible. Is this correct?

Agreed. I am really happy with the car (Tesla 3, nearly four years old, 135.000km and counting). However, the technical service through the app is quite annoying and very slow. Plus some stupid things (like pretending to charge 1200$ for the steering wheel even if I contacted them under warranty).

Correct. It seems European leaders can only see as far as their own navels.

And a quite true observation: politicians seem to be more brazen in taken advantage of their positions. This is certainly true in Spain. No need to say anything about the US. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

I am wondering how much of this is true in every modern country. Purchasing government stuff is a complete nightmare. And technically my research institute is part of our country administration, so it applies to us. Reforming it would be a welcome improvement. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/o...

Are the days of review papers ending?. My take is that due to AI their days are counted. They are usually very well cited. However, they are often used to boost journals IF and while some are very useful which select good references from noise, many are not.

Juan de la Figuera @juandelafiguera.bsky.social · 29/11/2024
Crazy. However, what I advocate instead is for routinely (pre)screening papers using AI, followed by regular peer review.

Mine are also older, and one is autistic, which greatly complicates things. But I agree with the general idea. A friend of mine used to say that kids need to learn to be bored 🙂

Voted on the european elections. However, in Spain I have not heard much about Europe, just local politics. Of which the discussion is pretty low level. I miss real European parties discussing European problems. Of which we have many to choose from. But I also miss more integration...

Kind of overwhelmed in some way. War with Russia (Europe should enforce a no fly zone ASAP), the US elections (a crazy guy that makes me understand why Hitler won, at least intellectually), the Spain's president melodrama (which is basically soap opera)... And AI being real after all this time.

After six years, the hard disk of our low-energy electron microscope died suddenly. Big pain. Yes, no backup of the configuration (data is fine). Oh, well. After one day everything is running again, thanks to Uwe@Elmitec for all the help!
