Cats love sitting in boxes. But a standard-sized @thorlabs.bsky.social Lab Snacks box is too small, surely? My wife reckoned otherwise, and Rowan was game for giving it a go. He's a small cat, but I didn't think he could pull it off. Turns out he's up for trying it once.

Karlin gave a great talk on his research into optically-gated heart imaging at @iop.org Photon26 last week. At the end of it his side-project "Optical gating: the arcade challenge" proved popular among the audience! Have a go and try and break into the high-score table... optical-gating.netlify.app

Good to see this confirmation about the lumenal macrophages that show up in fli1:gfp zebrafish! We see them zipping around the heart in our beating-heart timelapses like this one (credit: Daniel Olesker). They make it harder to see cell division events - how many divisions can you spot here?

Sigh. AI's still not there yet
AI-generated title for a LinkedIn post reads "Dr. Jonathon Taylolor". Can't even get my name right when it's spelled out in the post below

p.s. there's always something unexpected to raise your blood pressure at the 11th hour: in this case a 'secret' character limit in addition to the stated word limit for one of the sections on the form
"You have 2 words remaining. !! This answer has too many characters"

Big grant submitted, it's always a good sign when I'm *still* excited about the science even when the grind of the application is over 😀. I sketched this graph on my office whiteboard to explain to people the stress of when the trajectory feels like we won't get to the finish line in time!
Graph showing variable progress towards completion, not always on trajectory to reach the finish line before the deadline date

One thing that always lifts my spirits as the nights draw in is the sound of the geese coming south for the winter. Such cheery, chatty birds. (Watch with sound on)

The impromptu celebration lacked champagne flutes for the prosecco, so we had to make do with beer glasses 😂

I'm excited to be co-organising a workshop on Imaging Forces & Mechanobiology in Living Tissues @ Imperial College London, Wed 2 July (with @noelresearchlab.bsky.social & @jvermot.bsky.social). Register here forms.cloud.microsoft/e/hakfMEbgRB by 13 Jun (limited spaces; will confirm acceptance asap)
Word cloud of keywords written by attendees, including "imaging forces", "technologies", "forces and mechanobiology", "tissue tension" etc

More adventures with polarised sunglasses: today I learned that ice is birefringent! Beautiful patterns in ice left behind over the top of dried-up puddles - reflections from the lower surface plus birefringent effects (atoptics.co.uk/blog/ice-col...). Presumably requires monocrystalline ice?

When the sun shines, the west coast of Scotland is a great place to live and work. 20 minutes on the train from this front-door view and I'm in the biggest city in Scotland and heading in to a lab filled with talented people 😀🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I still have these, made by former PhD student Chiara Garbellotto - one for each team member's project. Fluorescent heart, one dual-labelled, one brightfield, one Airy point spread function, one with stripy flow fields 😍🔬🐠💚

It was a pleasure to co-host (with Dr Hasan Abbas) Sahil Sharma, who visited for a year from IIT Delhi on a Commonwealth Scholarship, to work on SIM and photothermal imaging at mid-infrared wavelengths. Sahil was a fast learner in experimental optics, and made great progress on an ambitious project!
