The Climate Systems Engineering Initiative outsourced the design of an aircraft w/ the thrust & wingspan necessary to carry & release materials in the stratosphere to aeronautical engineer John Langford, through his new company Iris Aero. There are no plans to build it, but it's a wild design:

Like, I get the point that it's hard to build new solar, wind, etc. But we're not exactly seeing a DAC development boom either (or any evidence that it's easier to fund, permit and build). To wit, total global capacity: 569 ktCO2/yr. blog.alliedoffsets.com/the-current-...

We wrapped up the climate & energy session with Koroush Shirvan, an associate professor of nuclear science at MIT, by discussing what's driving demand for small modular reactors, whether we're on the cusp of a nuclear renaissance & some of the big remaining challenges for the sector. #EmTech

It was also illuminating to chat with Lucia Tian, head of advanced energy at Google, about how the company is working toward its climate goals — & how it's 24/7 approach has informed its decisions to strike deals with new & re-commissioned nuclear, enhanced geothermal & CCS plants. #EmTech
