This oak bush-cricket spends its nights patrolling my roses in search of smaller inverterbrates. Instead of chirping like other crickets, it communicates by drumming its hind legs against leaves to attract a mate. Its super-long antennae, twice as long as its body, probed the warm midnight air.

I use voice commands when taking close-up photos of insects, such as this common blue butterfly and an azure damselfly. I must take care not to scare people when I'm one side of a hedgerow shouting "SMILE" to take an in-focus shot. Other options are cheese or shoot, which make matters worse.
