Old and busted: Power-over-ethernet. New hotness: powering your switch from your router's USB port using a home-soldered USB-A -> barrel jack adapter cable.
Photograph of two network devices. To the left is a Mikrotik access point, powered through a black cable coming in from below. To the right is a Netgear ethernet switch. The two devices are connected with a yellow ethernet cable, and the Netgear switch is also connected with another ethernet cable which leaves the frame at the bottom. The Mikrotik is powered through a black cable coming in from below. On the top side of the Mikrotik, an USB-A cable is plugged which plugs into the back side of the Netgear switch, acting as power source.

Okay, to illustrate. All of the attached pictures are Starlink or other sattelites, none are shooting stars. How do I know? I took series pictures and I can see the object moving through the frames. It's the only way to know, as you can see in the 3rd and 4th […] [Original post on zombofant.net]

Ohai hackernews crowd. I thought that post had tanked when it dropped out of New at one vote.
Screenshot of two line charts showing data of the past seven days. The top one shows "request rate" in requests per second. At around midnight of the 31st of July, the line rises sharply from around zero to 6, then falling of slightly to 2.5. The bottom one shows "egress traffic" in mebibytes per second. The line has a similar pattern, but peaks at 3 MiB/s.

@openstreetmap , I get that rate limiting for the routing service on openstreetmap.org is required. However, it would then be good to not fire a request on every pixel my mouse moves when I drag one of the start/end markers around :| . I got 429'd by just […] [Original post on zombofant.net]
Screenshot of the OpenStreetMap.org website. It shows the routing tool, set to a footpath. The map view is blurred. The router shows an error message: "Couldn't find a route between those two places". Below that, the developer tools are open and they show a request failing with status code 429. The start/endpoint in the URIs as well as the UI are replaced with Gimp peppers.

Today I learnt about multi-cursor editing in Katepart and thus #KDevelop (my favourite IDE, except for C/C++). I was like "okay, so that's probably where I normally use regexes?". When I later sat at a markdown list I wanted to transform into a two-column […] [Original post on zombofant.net]

Then I wondered: Can you actually reprogram a character while it is being displayed? Like you may expect in such an old chip, the #HD44780 does *not* latch the customized character anywhere. Instead, every time it scans out the characters to the LCD, it reads […] [Original post on zombofant.net]

Some of you who are deeper into it may also know that these are based on the #HD44780 IC by Hitachi. They are quirky (for example, in this four-line display, the second row has a higher address than the third row) and the font is baked into the ROM of the chip […] [Original post on zombofant.net]
Photograph of display showing text. It reads "Hello Fediversians!". The display is old-fashioned, with each letter being in a cell of 5x8 dark pixels against a transflective green-ish background. In the row below the text, there is a cell which shows a checkerboard pattern and next to that, a cell which shows an improvised "battery-half-empty" icon. The display is mounted in a dark brown bezel on a green printed copper board. At the top of the board, 16 wires are soldered which go out of frame. Each corner has a gold-plated screw hole.

Those of you who tinker with #DIY #Electronics projects might know these types of character-based liquid crystal displays. This one features 20 characters in four rows. Each cell has 5x8 pixels. The controller has a baked-in font with a (very nonstandard) […] [Original post on zombofant.net]

It had to be said.
Pie chart. The title says "What I use my photography light for". The section "Photography" (blue) in the Pie chart takes approximately 5%. The section "Hunting spiders" (red) takes the remaining 95%.
