Nom du plums for Cornish writer Alec McQuay - currently horror, humour, and both. He/him, hefty lefty, ADHD, mental illness, anti-hate in all its forms. I have trans family members so don't even try it.

Unfortunately and undoubtedly true. On the odd occasion that they have a point I believe there's a correlation with stars (who are not writers) becoming executive producers, which is where alarm bells go off for me. But I don't join in, except in private. "Not for me" does not equal "bad."

There are never the words. I'm sorry dude, that's a hell of a tough situation and I hope life is kind to you while you're dealing with all of that.

Jason Mantzoukas was INCREDIBLE on Taskmaster. I'd like them to get Jason Sudeikis on some time. Possibly Momoa. Then Segel. Biggs. Bateman. The UK can supply Statham, Isaacs, and Flemyng. @taskmaster.tv - Give me your huddled Jasons.

Prepare to be thoroughly underwhelmed and overwhelmed at the same time in a never ending cycle that repeats every time they restock. A store where you'll be breezily choosing a freshly baked pastry one moment, crushed under foot by rampaging bargain dehumidifier enthusiasts the next. Bon chance.

They totally do, but they don't sell fuel for the chainsaws so if someone gets the axe, but you've got a shield made from Squish Mallows taped to a deflated space hopper and a sharpened telescopic shower curtain rail for a lance, you're in with a shot.

Business idea. Live-streamed Battle Royale, weapons allowed, but it is filmed in Lidl and you can only use what you find in the middle aisle.

Last I checked my wife and I had watched basically all of the chess boxing on the tubes so I would 100% subscribe to whatever the hell this is.

They come at you with the sauce, you come at them with the baby powder. They put one of ours on a chair, we put one of theirs on a weekend break to Scunthorpe.

Very but we carry on. I'm lucky to be able to say we have a small but absolutely FANTASTIC team here and nothing is going to put us down and out. I would just like for us to not have to go home worrying about what might happen that we can't control. And I'd like to stop being such a miserable prick.

This is true! I think the part that's making me the most angry is that while I know it's business, I'm sat here after a year watching the business struggle through no fault of our own and they're on about THEIR cash flow problems. So sorry YOUR plumbing leaked and destroyed what we built. Boohoo.

Hot take - “tiny homes” are a manifestation of Pinterest-friendly poverty. Space to live is a sign of comfortable living. Condensing space - however well designed - is a sign that people can’t afford to be comfortable… and they’re packaging it as an “empowering lifestyle choice”.

Thank you :) I was right, btw. Landlord is lodging a formal complaint against their insurer based on information we gave them months ago and which they are only now actioning. Whole thing is ridiculous but we shall prevail.

Waking up to a beautiful sky over Troon this morning and a cool wind under a bright grey-blue sky. Witness reports of a giant marshmallow bloke are as yet unconfirmed. Off to the day job where we're expecting further landlord shenanigans. Wish me luck, and the grace to remain calm.

SO good. His Dracula number in Forgetting Sarah Marshall was also great but with a certain colossal scumbag in that cast it's hard to want to watch that again.

I absolutely agree. I will always love The Muppets but it has been some time since they had something really brilliant out there, and Jason Siegel I think deserves his flowers for that movie.

Happy birthday Al, I meant to pop online to say it on the big day but I managed to sleep through most of the weekend and I did a forgot. I hope it was a great one, although I'm sure you were well loved and spoiled rotten so little need for hope.

I bet that's a fun thing about writing a script. You can write your little paragraphs of scene-setting and detail to paint the picture but you're not slowing things down. I've been told I have a "cinematic" writing style but I do need to be more about economical with it too. Something to learn.

The hardest thing about writing a gory scene is to STOP writing it. You can gleefully get into describing the most horrible stuff. Minute detail about bone fragments, chewed edges, congealed spatters, piles of wobbly bits, and ENTRAILS? Such a good word. Less is more, but more is fun to write.

Of interest to some, and something to look forward to reading for others. Weird fact - This kind of activity is one of my favourite things about being a writer. Short, creative, fun, and NOVEL exercises where I can chat about things I love? For an ADHD creative this shit is basically catnip.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

I added a personal post to my Bluesky earlier and I've now removed it - apologies, this is a writing account and not my place to scream into the void or fish for sympathy. I am trying, though I remain quite bad at social media.

Would be great if the world could put Rashida Jones in more stuff. She's so good in Parks & Rec... I mean it's an amazing cast all-round but I love Ann Perkins. She's straight-laced, sensible, responsible, surrounded by agents of chaos, and the show wouldn't be the same without her.

True :P I think I might keep it for the nonsensical story I'm writing perhaps because it does make sense to me. I know exactly what MY cutlery smells like when it's fresh out of the washer and can extrapolate how it would smell if it was on fire. I don't think anyone else will though.

The urge to flood another person's wall with terrible puns connected to something they just posted is always there, and some days I really have to fight it with everything I have. Especially on days where I'm feeling down and I could really use the fucking dopamine.

Good film and great song (Ryan Martinie is a bass guitar hero of mine so no Mudvayne hate) but it's about as jarring as it would be if Uncle Frank completed The Lament Configuration and when Pinhead appeared he had Fred Durst's voice, and yelled "WE'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL TO THE MATTHEWS BRIDGE."

I'm no expert in the mechanics but I know a little about how sound is used, and that end scene... The gold loaded onto a new ship. Eye contact with the evil salvager. Knowing it will all happen again... Ominous double bass? Drop the music to a minor scale? Contrabass theremin solo??? Nah. THIS.

Can't say it's been a productive morning but as a horror writer I think I can class watching Ghost Ship on my laptop as research, right? Good/bad film for sure. SO noughties. And the MUSIC... Where else will you find jazz, swing, the theme from The Love Boat, and then, suddenly, Mudvayne?

Most days I'm utterly grateful for the meds I have to help me function, work, and maintain some level of stability in my life. Other days I look at that heap of tablets I take just to feel normal and to not crumble into a sobbing mess, I think about the people responsible, and I think... Fuck you.

Rough time to be a writer. Thanks to the efficiency of Netflix's AI division the idea I had in the shower this morning was added to voice notes, optioned, picked up, developed, processed, cancelled at 67% rendering, and filed as an insurance write-off before I'd dried off enough to put my boxers on.
