I think that's meant to be traveller's joy rather than daisies. Daisies don't grow on the tops of hedges like that. The eyes and the spots still work though.

A thought occurs. Has anyone tried asking an AI to design an intelligent lifeform?

AI is like a digestive tract. Whatever you put in at one end gets chewed up and shat out at the other.

Unless I'm mistaken the neanderthals survived ice ages in Europe before modern humans arrived. They might have been tough dudes, but I doubt they would have survived without fire.

Seems a bit sexist, with the young lad apparently less keen on the grocery shopping than his mother and sister.

Normally the bells would be in the service area. Ebenezer hears them ringing all at once in the story as part of the haunting. Filmmakers sometimes show them ringing in the room where Ebenezer is because they think it's more dramatic.

I seem to recall a superstition that cats would sit on a sleeping infant and steal their breath.

We had a shed with a corrugated iron roof. Underneath a 40 foot oak tree. When the acorns started dropping on that it sounded like gunshots.

Looks as if it's meant to resemble a scallop shell, which I'm told the Romans considered lucky.

CD seems to have been a bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to new technology. He didn't even like trains.

Pepys didn't write the letter. It was written by someone in Orkney five years before the fire and sent to someone living on a street that was later destroyed by the fire. The quote from Pepys is from his diary, recording the later destruction of the street in 1666.

They have probably switched to wood because it's sustainable and peat isn't. Also not sure how many actual peat bogs there are in Orkney. I never encountered any when I was there.

It's just the name of the leader of a group of Germanic migrants who moved in and settled down after the collapse of the Roman empire. If that bothers people 1600 years later they will just have to put up with it.

I wondered about that as well. What you can see of the background scenery does seem to rise a bit more steeply than I would expect for London.
