Noal plummeted down the rope tied to the balcony banister, fibers tearing through the skin of his palms as the sound of musket fire blared from the rooms above.
He landed hard on the terrace outside the palace and bolted-heart thundering. Ahead. eleven-year-old Prince Oratharran ran, feet flying as they fled for the stables. Light from the full moon illuminated the ground before him, glowing on the ridge that stretched high on their left, a steep drop to the river below on their right.
Phrases from the Guardian Codex, the document that informed Noal's entire life and upbringing, rose in his mind.
'Shield the charge, move to a secure location.
The siege had begun that morning. At least, everyone had assumed it was a siege. The Zendarian army. brought across the strait by the staggering two-hundred-and-fifty ship fleet, now hemmed in the city's east-facing port and northern wall. The King. his advisors, and Noal's own father-the king's Guardian. had assumed they'd receive a message at dawn from the empire, demanding sworn fealty. They'd assumed the Empress wanted another monarch in her pocket.
They were wrong.
They came over the ridge. It was the only plausible explanation for the midnight attack. The ridge that backed the city had always been a defense. protecting Vandryn's rear flank.
But
while
everyone's attention had been on the army, a smaller force must have been sent to strike the palace directly. Chills down Noal's spine as he ran.
The roll of musket fire and screams from the palace echoed behind him. His older sister was still back there, probably protecting the Crown Prince. His father undoubtedly defended the king and queen.
In a crisis, your sole responsibility is to your charge. He couldn't think about his family now. His responsibility was to the second born prince, and him alone.
In several long strides, he caught up to the Orath and kept pace behind him. The prince was fast for his age.

Blood had never bothered Lennari. It was just the thing that leaked out when skin was damaged.
So when she casually brought the hatchet down on the rooster's neck, separating his head from his body, she didn't flinch, or even blink. The red liquid drained from the opening and spilled into the grass beside the stump as she held him upside down. There was a beauty in the deep red color
-few things in nature were so rich a hue. Plucking the feathers and removing the innards, she finished the processing with practiced efficiency.
Lennari smiled as she stepped down the bank, bare feet padding on stones and avoiding nettles.
The stream babbled as she dunked the bird into the water, cooling it quickly. There was a time she did this almost daily for the Order. Never again. Now she gladly preformed the task for her family.
Family. The word still sounded foreign; as did wife, and mother. But they were words she cherished more than she'd ever thought possible.
Task complete, she stood-then froze, body going perfectly still. Her stomach rolled, skin prickled, heart ticked faster. With a held breath, she listened, trying to hear...something beneath the sound of the stream and the birds. She lifted her eyes to the tree line on the on the other side of the stream and scanned the nearby woods for signs of movement.
It was that pesky feeling that had been plaguing her on and off for the past month. The uncanny sense that something was watching her-preying on her. She waited.
Nothing.

While the other two slept, Orath sat in front of the fire, arms hugging his knees as he watched amber lines weave
through the air. He was clean, his belly full of roasted chicken, potatoes, and buttered bread. He was warm, and the clothing was soft and clean and comfortable. He felt as though he underwent a thawing. Not just from the cold, but a melting of his taught muscles.

Once Orath caught his breath and gathered his wits he sat up and peered into the basket. Not only was there the stack of flatbreads, but a lump of fresh soft cheese wrapped in a cheesecloth, a jar of honey, and a lemon. He grinned as he bit right into the soft humble cheese, coating his mouth in a layer of fat. Next he opened the jar of honey and dipped a finger right into it then sucked off the sweetness. It mingled with the creamy tang of the goat cheese, and he suddenly felt spoiled, that he didn’t deserve such luxury. He had to blink away the wetness in his eyes at the taste.
He was so hungry he couldn’t help but finish off the cheese and one of the flatbreads, but he forced himself to put the rest in his pouch to share with the others. Lex at least deserved some of the honey.
