Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan. This historical fantasy contains a unique take on the Beast of Gévaudan, Joan of Arc, & other historical incidents filtered through a narrator that is at once amusingly profane & deeply sad. #purrfectreads

There are so many books by authors whose work I follow coming out this fall, I'm giddy with excitement over new books by Emily St. John Mandel, China Mieville, Leigh Bardugo, Christopher Buelhman, and Madeline ffitch, to name a few. Its an embarrassment of riches!

Dr. Pullen & Fidil recommend The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. This historical horror novel is a page turner that is at once dark & hopeful about human potential, with two siblings struggling against racism & supernatural horrors, helped by their community. #purrffectreads

Writer friends, how often do you update your author photo? Mine are about eight years old...I think I may need a new one. If you live in NW, do you have recommendations for someone who takes a cool author photos?

Fellow writers, if you had to pick one book that lit the writing spark for you, that first made you think you wanted to be a writer, what would it be?

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend The Changeling Sea by Patricia McKillip. They'd never heard of this novella before & were delighted to discover a used copy at their local bookstore. McKillip's gorgeous prose conjures the feeling of a folktale, unknowably old, rediscovered. #purrfectreads

In the 2006 science fiction novel 'Rainbow's End' by Vernor Vinge, he had AIs shredding books as they ingested them at scale. Threw me out of the story, because obviously that would never happen IRL. 😑

A fantasy novel from the last few years had, I swear, at least a dozen smirks and eyerolls within the first chapter, that was no more than 10-15 pages. It was SO annoying. The smirks and eyerolls were even used as dialogue tags at times. I quit after the first chapter.

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Written on the Dark by @guygavrielkay.bsky.social. This book was the treat she saved herself to binge at the end of the semester. Kay is one of our finest prose stylists & a spinner of enrapturing tales. His newest historical fantasy is perfection. #purrfectreads

I went to Vermont for the first time for a college roomie girl's weekend. Two people had a terrible time with flights and never arrived ( American Airlines, UGH), but one friend made it, and we had a lovely time! In other news, I'm now obsessed with Vermont.

My contributor's copy for The Mid-American review has arrived. I submitted long before I knew I would someday work at BGSU, and I'm so I'm extra excited for my meta-fictional story about Christina Rossetti to within. And to share space with @gwenekirby.bsky.social! @midamericanreview.bsky.social.

Its always fun being trapped into explaining to a random customer service person how AI works, that you can't copyright anything created with AI, and that "writing" with AI makes you a writer as much as microwaving a hot pocket makes you a chef.

I've finished my first graduate workshop syllabus!! One syllabus down, and one more to go for next semester. The luxury of only teaching 2 classes is unbelievable. I've made 5 syllabi each semester for most of the last 9 years. I'll get to focus so much more on my students now.

When I buy beautiful notebooks I feel compelled to hoard them instead of write in them. Like buying beautiful handmade soap at a craft fair and just taking it out to smell and never using it, lol (also something I have been guilty of in the past). I'm trying to break the habit and write in them.

When radioactivity was discovered, there was a rush to market for all sorts of radioactive consumer goods. There were water jugs made out of uranium glass, for example. I think about that a lot these days whenever I see AI products being marketed to consumers.
