Lean reportedly watched John Ford's 1956 film The Searchers to help him develop ideas as to how to shoot the film. Several scenes directly recall Ford's film, most notably Ali's entrance at the well and the composition of many of the desert scenes and the dramatic exit from Wadi Rum…-𝐰𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚

Super Panavision technology was used to shoot the film, meaning that spherical lenses were used instead of anamorphic ones..

The production of Freddy's Dead coincided with the original airing of Twin Peaks which was later acknowledged as an influence on the film with its more surreal humorous aspects. Elements of this can be seen throughout the film including Freddy using a version of the Nintendo Power Glove to control Spencer's character and dragging a bed of spikes to impale John Doe in a manner reminiscent of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon..- 𝐰𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚

William A. Fraker attributed the success of the chase sequence primarily to the work of Frank P Keller (who won an Oscar for his editing abilities). At the time, Keller was credited with cutting the piece in such a superb manner that he made the city of San Francisco a "character" in the film.

Regarding his interest in horror, King says "It’s built in. That’s all. The first movie I ever saw was a horror movie. It was Bambi. When that little deer gets caught in a forest fire, I was terrified, but I was also exhilarated." He recalls showing his mother a story he copied out of a comic book. She responded: "I bet you could do better. Write one of your own." He recalls "an immense feeling of possibility at the idea, as if I had been ushered into a vast building filled with closed doors and had been given the key to open any I liked."

“When, during the course of an interview for The New Yorker, I told the interviewer (Mark Singer) that I believed stories are found things, like fossils in the ground, he said that he didn't believe me. I replied that that was fine, as long as he believed that I believe it. And I do. Stories aren't souvenir tee-shirts or GameBoys. Stories are relics, part of an undiscovered pre-existing world. The writer's job is to use the tools in his or her toolbox to get as much of each one out of the ground intact as possible. Sometimes the fossil you uncover is small, a seashell. Sometimes it's enormous, a Tyrannosaurus Rex with all those gigantic ribs and grinning teeth. Either way, short story or thousand-page whopper of a novel, the techniques of excavation remain basically the same.”

(The amazing) Sean Harris as Philip Connell..

The film's visual style was inspired by public information films that Holness had seen during his youth. These films, which were intended to shock youth out of making bad decisions, often depicted children being kidnapped, maimed, and/or killed. The films deeply disturbed Holness, who later recalled, "They were put on between children's programming during the day; you'd see these horrific, terrifying films – you got the impression that the adult world was a very tribal place. Of course, now we know several of those films are fronted by real-life monsters."- 𝘄𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮

The film's Possum puppet was designed by Sydney-based Odd Studios. Matthew Holness worked closely with designer and close friend Dominic Hailstone on coming up with the puppet's final design. Macabre artworks and taxidermy were heavily referenced during the design process. As creature design supervisor Adam Johansen later stated in an interview, "We tried to achieve a very home made feel for our Possum but one that is twisted and disturbing." Hailstone sculpted the Possum's face, which was made to resemble Harris' character..
