If a company is losing money or needs to cut costs? It should be a goddamn law that the ones at the tippy top see those cuts, first. Nintendo CEOs gave themselves a paycut when the company hit a rough patch. That should not only be the norm, but enforced by law.

Decision-making research points to people using heuristics, like eliminating deal breakers and future imagery. Utility models provide "better" decisions, but don't align with actual behavior, making them prescriptive, not descriptive. That means there is room for decision assistance apps, though!

A close family friend, who is only 13, is in his first paid production, an original musical called Kidz in Space. It is aimed at young kids but has been entertaining and the cast are very talented! If you live in #ashlandoregon, check it out this weekend at the Ashland Armory.

This isn't really a place to convince anyone of anything. And it is hard to say what the majority of artists are doing without formal research. Certainly the copyright laws have steered book publishers towards strong no-A.I. stances and musicians don't see much reason to give up their instruments.

The reality in which artists push back against A.I. because the artist-consumer relationship has been fundamentally altered on an unprecedented scale? That reality? Yeah, I'm living it. We all are. The "tool" doesn't have to act human to be so fundamentally disruptive. Nor do we have to accept it.

As I have stated, they do not engage at all. They compile. I can throw my novel in a trash heap and get the same level of engagement. And no, I don't see them as an individual. They are parasitic, as in the biological sense. They take from the host without providing any benefit to said host.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
Thus, the expectations of the artist and the consumer are both broken. This is something that no artist or consumer has ever had to worry about in the history of art. So the experience of an artist trying to communicate to other people has become muddied in a fundamental way.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
They have expected, for 50,000+ years, that individuals will look at, read, watch, or hear their art and understand something. Art is communication. I don't write a novel to put it in a shredder unless I don't want someone to read it. LLMs have no such expectation nor do A.I. scrapers provide that.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
I was talking about what you have said in terms of having "explained yourself", which, again, appears to largely have centered on theft. You're welcome to take another crack at it if you had a broader point, though.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
I'm receptive to another word for "an instance of a one engaging with art to be affected by the ideas and/or emotions therein" if you have one. I certainly am not talking about laws or theft, though. It is a cultural problem, one that is very old and well-established between artist and consumer.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
I'm not arguing about theft, which you appear to be talking about. Perhaps you are poorly explaining yourself?

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
Could be. Social media sucks for this kind of long-form discussion. But I also think you are assuming I am making a stock standard argument that you've had before. I am not

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
That is absolutely the transaction I am referring to. That *is* a transaction. It is the very one that people have relied on by artists and consumers of art for tens of thousands of years. It is that same transaction that is undermined by industrial consumption and creation of art.
100
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
Where are you getting consent from? You are having an argument totally different from what this topic is about.
100
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
It isn't a debate about ethics. You've totally lost the thread. I said it is not part of the artist transaction. Art has developed over tens of thousands of years as a transactional (social and economic) interaction. Strip mining art on a mass scale breaks that relationship fundamentally.
110
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
And I am not saying it is required. Art would still exist in a post -scarcity world. The social engagement is expected in art. Strip mining art for an LLM lacks any of that expected transaction.
100
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
This is a false equivalence. It won't hold up even under the slightest scrutiny. A single human cannot match the scale of industrial consumption of art.
101
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
Financially and/or socially, I should have said.
100
J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
But here is the quandary that comes from my viewpoint. Does a single person using A.I. to create a socially and politically relevant feature-length film qualify as art? If they labor over the course of months, it seems to intuitively. If it is a single prompt, it seems like the A.I. is the creator.

J. Powell Taylor (Read The Inevitable Dr. Entropy) @jpowelltaylor.com · 19/08/2026
The economic grounds is my objection. My objection is mainly one of scale. It is not just about taking jobs (we would have a lot of human art in a Star Trek post-scarcity world). It is also about the social transaction of art. Data (sticking with Star Trek) making portraits on the boardwalk is art.

In these discussions about ai/consciousness, one thing I am admittedly a bit sensitive about for personal reasons is that often when people try to define-in what it is to be a person, they (no doubt accidentally) define out a lot of people with cognitive handicaps.

So it isn't about intelligence, really. It is a social contract that A.I. can be a part of, even as an LLM! If C3PO consumes & creates art within the social contract, then I think it would definitely be unethical to forbid him from participating. Lobot, though, can fuck right off. 4/4

As a counterpoint, if Lobot (Lando Calrissian's cyborg admin assistant) consumes art by downloading illegal copies en masse and calls them up to enjoy them in his cyborg brain whenever he wants, he has violated the artist economy in two fundamental ways, despite NOT strictly being an A.I. 3/?
