A Trans-Tasman collaboration between IMAS & @aucklanduni.bsky.social researchers shows Longspined Sea Urchins are a huge threat to NE #NewZealand marine ecosystems. And as the region is at lower latitudes, the impact there could outstrip what we've seen in #Tasmania. Study: doi.org/10.1016/j.je...

A new study in @naturesustain.bsky.social reveals that establishing a commercial fishery to intentionally overfish an unwanted yet marketable species, like the Longspined Sea #Urchin in #Tasmania, can be a sustainable option to protect vital marine ecosystems: utas.au/EattheProblem

📑 #NewStudy by Cresswell et al. unpicks the paradoxical situation of a government-subsidised campaign for OVER #fishing: targeting an overgrazing sea urchin to counteract the impacts of #climatechange. 👀 doi.org/10.1038/s418...

Despite this positive news, there is still much needed work in expanding international markets, product development, and increasing the profitability and sustainability of the sector for long term sea urchin control.

In a globally changing climate with limited resources, it will be increasingly important for adaption methods to be financially viable, as well as ecologically significant.

Regionally variable catch subsidies are re-directing fishing effort along the coastline to maximise benefit. Without these the urchin impact would be significantly worse.

The research shows that the harvest of Longspined Sea Urchins is limiting the destruction of kelp reefs along Tasmania’s East Coast, home to valuable Rock Lobster and Abalone fisheries.

Our latest research paper in Nature Sustainability explores concepts of utilising a commercial harvest industry to control range extending, invasive, or overabundant species. lnkd.in/gMfkgzNr Full access link:https://rdcu.be/edo8f

Shamelessly taking advantage of the bluesky migration to share again some of my favorite echinoderm pics 😀🤩 🔽 Acetylated tubulin (nerves and cilia) and phalloidin (muscles) stains in a juvenile sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) just after metamorphosis ⭐
