I've only ever owned two "Flagship" models. One was factory reconditioned the other the was the store display unit when that model was discontinued. Both at a great discount. I have a new purchase coming up this fall, but it is more of an entry level camera and priced as such.

An interesting read that might provide additional insight into the sociological and psychological dimensions here is "Bowling Alone" by Robert Putnam.

The great divide is Sheetz vs Wawa. Pittsburgh vs Philly. Animosity runs deep!!!! Wawa got to Ind first. Sheetz will be sometime next year.

Never been, never intend to. Sheetz is my crack in this space. I have no idea what that says about me politically.

Also speaks to the idea that if you get one good photo from a roll of film, you are doing pretty well for yourself.

I have come to many of these same conclusions over the past few years. It all makes sense when you realize these organizations are not programming to attract gate revenue, they program to attract large scale gifts and endowments from the uber wealthy. They are building an unsustainable ivory tower.

Similar dynamics ... Want someone to publish a photobook of your work? Three options: 1 - Be dead. 2 - Be famous already. 3 - Bring a bag of cash. Distribution is a challenge, but developing the skills to self publish is the way forward if you want your work to be seen in that format.

Stopped by the printer today to pick up a couple boxes with the tabloid edition of The Chasm on Virginia Avenue! Will debut at the Cincinnati Art Book Fair at the end of the month. Details: www.f28press.com

Quick note. We will be at the Cincinnati Art Book Fair again this year, Aug 29 & 30. We may have some room at our table to present and distribute a few partner publications. If you are interested, give us a shout. We can see if your book or zine is a good fit for our table and the show.

Canva & Adobe are taking 2 different extremist approaches to the two part tariff problem. Adobe all subscription (up front) and no per use fee. Canva no up front and then imposing per use fees for Gen AI or AI assistant usage. Canva starting w/ a smaller market share, that is what they need to do.

My plan is to continue using my current desktop version of Affinity as long as I can. I would be worried how long any "Free" licenses would stay free within the Canva ecosystem.

John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
After a year and a half of free access, in January, Canva bundled Flourish with their core product and placed it behind a very, very steep subscription price wall and I cannot use it for education anymore. I would expect the same will eventually occur with affinity.
100
John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
BUT. Canva bought Affinity last year in its quest to assemble the assets to create a duopolistic competitor to Adobe. A few years earlier, they bought another piece of software, flourish.studio that I used in my collegiate teaching of statistics.

Not to be the buzzkill guy here, I have been using affinity for ~4 years now, love it, but it wasn't free. There was a negligible $30 site license, but not big deal. If it had stayed that way it would be great.

A good haul at the used bookstore in FT Wayne yesterday. That third one, aside from the self-portraits on the cover, is an Atget like archive of the town about 30 miles to my southeast.

Do you have the volume discounts for ISBN's that the states have? I bought 10 the last time to save myself enduring frustration. Turned on Max for a month so I can watch the Giro, $9.99 will turn it off immediately once it is over. People who aren't so selective are the problem here...

Curious what that exact search from months ago would yield today. The development timeline of these models is disturbingly compressed. Will take 3 years to accomplish what digital photography did in 50, from the first Kodak digital prototype in the 70's to now. And no one is trying to manage it.

John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
The google algorithms from even a couple months ago screened differently for likelihood of info being correct. The old thresholds would have settled for any linkage, even distant .0001% > 0% so it got published. Now they screen harder for linkages that have higher probabilities of being correct.

John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Google on the other hand has the biggest dataset. It has too much info. There are likely more people that share your name and back in 2001 one of them may have visited these places and posted it as a blog comment or something. I share a name w/famous people and it is hard to get a clean read on me.

John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
I saw the details of the previous search 6(?) months ago. Two things come into play. Dataset size and probability filtering on the back end. DDG has a tiny dataset, so it has to extrapolate a lot earlier than other bots, hence linking your zine to the basic historical definition of a zine

As for the searches you and I did, I found the summary of my work credible, but it only used a couple sources where I had crafted the message. It is embellished with unrealistic adjectives. "Famously" in particular. 😂

My students' attitudes have begun to shift on AI. Where they were once were excited to take short cuts, they are now extremely worried about what taking these short cuts will bring to their personal development, and are scared about the implications for their future employment prospects.

I fully expect that once "super" AI agents are deployed into educational platforms, I will be out of a job in 2 to 5 years. The unspoken truth about the last election cycle here, was about putting people (one person spcifically) in place that would by chaotic default, let the genie out of the bottle

Selecting an AI engine is a bit like selecting a lens for making an image. It makes a difference. The "narrow" applications it's hard to take issue with. My students can do library research in minutes that used to take hours. Generative & then certainly "Super" AI capabilities need regulation. NOW

John Pemberton @jpindycar.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Thanks! When I searched your project (an item earlier in the string) I got something that seemed fairly reasonable, particularly compared to results you received. Results will depend on the type of AI engine you use. I used the "narrow" AI bot on Google. I suspect that you used a generative tool.

Over the past few years I have almost entirely swapped back to film. For all these reasons. I want to focus on pictures that say something, tell a story, or stir a memory. Perceptions of a moment can be blurred, memories can be fuzzy. There's no crime if the images that invoke them are too.

Social media platforms exist to collect data for the creation of AI models. New social media platforms simply represent that a new set of investors wants to play the same game. Complaining about AI on social media is tantamount to professing of being a vegetarian while working in a slaughter house.

An accomplishment of last year that I probably under appreciate is that I camera scanned all of my BW negatives dating back to the mid 80's. About a third from back in the day, 2/3rds the past 5 years. Next year will feature this adventure. One I haven't done in over 30 years.
