DigitalOcean is making a big financial commitment to Omarchy, joining the Omacom Foundation as a Founding Corporate Patron with $3 million in support.
Under the deal, DigitalOcean will give $1 million each year for the next three years to help develop, maintain, and grow the Arch-based Omarchy Linux distribution.
Once again, it is hard to overlook how much money is going to this relatively new Linux project. Omarchy creator David Heinemeier Hansson says DigitalOcean’s pledge brings the foundation’s total support to about $18.5 million.
That total has grown quickly. Just a few days ago, we reported that Omacom had reached $13 million in funding, with plans to spend all of it over the next three years.
On September 7, the foundation said its total pledges and donations had reached about $15.5 million. Just two days later, that number is now around $18.5 million.
The deal with DigitalOcean also happened very quickly. DHH says he reached out to CEO Paddy Srinivasan on X on a Wednesday, talked with him that evening, sent a proposal on Saturday, and finalized the agreement by Sunday.
DigitalOcean now joins Meta Superintelligence Labs as another Founding Corporate Patron. The new funding is already leading to paid jobs. Omacom recently hired Krzysztof Wilczyński as Head of Omarchy Kernel, and Quickshell creator outfoxxed has become Head of Omarchy Shell.
Omarchy’s rapid expansion is visible beyond funding, too. Earlier this week, the project launched a completely redesigned Omarchy.org website, now available in 29 languages.
DHH says the foundation plans to use its growing funds to let developers work full-time on improving Omarchy and related open-source projects. However, DigitalOcean’s announcement has also created an uncomfortable comparison.

Compared to DigitalOcean’s new Omarchy commitment, it’s hard not to notice the difference: about $600 per year for the canceled infrastructure sponsorship, versus $1 million per year for Omarchy.
Of course, this does not mean one decision led to the other, and there is no proof that DigitalOcean moved money from GNOME or Flathub to Omarchy. Still, the difference has caught the Linux community’s attention and also raises a bigger question that is getting harder to ignore.
Omarchy is a niche, dev- and AI-focused Linux distro that is still quite new, but it is somehow attracting funding at a rate unseen in the Linux desktop world. At the same time, much older and more widely used open-source projects often struggle to pay for developers, infrastructure, and basic expenses.
Of course, open-source funding has never depended only on project age, user numbers, or technical importance. Omarchy stands out right now because it has visibility, momentum, a strong story about Linux and AI agents, and DHH’s wide network of founders and tech leaders.
The DigitalOcean deal shows this clearly. It went from an initial message to the CEO to a three-year, $3 million agreement in just a few days.
Omacom Foundation has also said it does not plan to just hold onto the money. Everything raised during 2026 is expected to be spent over the next three years on developers, artists, infrastructure, grants, competitions, and open-source projects that Omarchy relies on.
So the main question is changing quickly. It is no longer about whether Omarchy can attract major funding. With about $18.5 million in support, that question is clearly answered.
Now, the more interesting question is what Omarchy and the wider Linux community will actually achieve with this support.
