Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 14/01/2026I've been playing around with painting plants on my pieces. This one is deep blue morning glories, one of my favorite flowers. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/01/2026Third bowl in this series. This one is wider and shallower, and has black and a pinkish-purple glaze, both of them glossy. They overlap to give an interesting gray, which I didn't expect! I tried these colors quite on a whim, but I really like how it turned out. 010
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/01/2026Second bowl in this "series" (though I didn't actually make them as a series). This one has two overlapping colors - the deep glossy blue and white. The speckles in the white are in the clay, not the glaze. The two glazes interact in a wonderful rich blue with some lighter highlights, I love it! 100
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/01/2026I've done a lot of experimenting with overlapping two or three different glazes on bowls, to see how they interact with each other. I have three bowls here - two bowls in the comments due to photo limits on posts. Details in the alt text. 100
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 31/12/2025He's supposed to be gray! But glazes are kind of unpredictable. I know he's a GBH, though, 'cause I made him! 😀 010
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 31/12/2025Last summer I got interested in using relief to decorate pottery. The first pieces I did were these flat ones - that seemed easier than decorating mugs or bowls with relief. See the ALT text for details on each. 130
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 27/12/2025Recently I decided I wanted to make animals in clay, and thought I'd start with a red fox. I watched some videos on youtube and got to work. Foxy is still a work in process, but it's an interesting process! See the ALT text for lots of details. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 26/12/2025I love it! I have a polar bear (sculpture) like that - for a moment I was confused and thought this was some photo I'd posted at some point! It's great. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 26/12/2025I used the tape-masking stripe technique to make a couple of brightly colored mugs. Neither is perfect - the red, yellow, and blue one has two cracks and the blue and black one has spots in the black glaze on the handle. But they are all experiments, so it's okay! 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 25/12/2025This small pitcher was made by putting 1/4 inch tape on the bisqued piece in the pattern you see, dipping it into white and blue gray glazes, and then peeling off the tape to reveal the bare clay. This works best with matte glazes that don't run much, and with horizontal lines. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 24/12/2025This mug was hand built, which is how it can be square on the bottom but round on top. Those who know my work might recognize the coast of Newfoundland, which is on a lot of my work. Scroll through the photos to see the tree on the handle, the seagulls inside, and the tree on the bottom. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 23/12/2025I've been doing a lot of pottery in the past few months, in several different styles. I figured it's time to share some of it. These are hawthorn berries. I didn't pick them for the season, but they do seem rather appropriate! So happy Chanukah, everyone! 050

Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 29/03/2025I've been focusing my artwork on political graphics lately. What else can we do? WE CAN PROTEST! April 5, protests nationwide. To find one near you, go to www.mobilize.us/handsoff/map/ In New York, meet at Bryant Park and march to Madison Park, 1:00 to 3:00. Be there! 020
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 17/02/2025I've been learning pottery since the fall, for no good reason. After six months the majority of my pieces at least are worth keeping! (The rest go to the thrift shop. 😂) I wish the studio had more warm-colored glazes! #art #pottery #glaze #ceramic #newyorkartist #clay #bowls #dishes 0100
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 17/02/2025This is lovely? Is it paint or something else? 100
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 15/02/2025That's what we are calling it here, too - a coup. 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 15/02/2025It's a little bit finicky! And I realized after the first piece (not this one) that I had to make the triangles on the two sheets different sizes to get the to line up right in the woven part, because of the bending in the warp paper in order to fit around the weft paper. 010
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 14/02/2025I'm intrigued with weaving, but don't have a loom. So for a while I was weaving paper. I kind of like the results, though at times the process was a nuisance! See alt text for details. #weaving #paper #paperart #art #newyorkartist #scissors #handmade #analog 2371
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 12/02/2025Spring's not that far away! Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 08/02/2025I was looking for something else on my computer and found this photo from last winter, the view out my window. Black & white photos can be so much more interesting than color. #photography #NewYork #newyorkartist #Manhattan #black&white #art #bluesky.art #snow #citylife #view 0140

Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Have you seen all the videos on line of people skating on perfectly clear and snow-free frozen lakes in New England? It's amazing! Alas, nothing is frozen here. No snowshoeing... 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Well, yes, of course, that would be a painting you made! ;-))) 010
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Telephoto lenses (or zoom lenses) are awesome for doing candid portraits. Not that you seem to do portraits! But it's amazing how well you can capture people when they have no idea it's them in your viewfinder. 010
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 02/02/2025That looks like a good idea! I'm forever trying to keep from getting ink in the wrong places... 110
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025It's extraordinary - I hadn't seen this before! But having just googled it, it seems like it was just built as one man's "folly" (not in a critical sense, in the sense of something pretty but frivolous that a rich person decided to create), and has never really been used. Looks dangerous to cross! 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025Aha, I get it! Thank you. Maybe I should create "artist refugees from the metaverse!" 😂 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025I actually seem to follow more artists in the UK (and Newfoundland) than in the US! Though if you want a delightful US artist to follow, do check out @lisalebofsky.bsky.social Proper art, for sure. 210
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025Aha! Would you be willing to add me to this group? That would be delightful! 000
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025Yup, I did see that! How do you create a starter pack? Is that some other specific tool in Blue Sky? Do you group artists (or other posters, of course) into a category and give them all that label? Thanks for helping me figure out this new-to-me platform! 500
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025I'm intrigued by the circular mosaics in some Venice church floors, and started playing with creating the same patterns in cut paper, and then using the result as a stencil to paint the patterns. See alt text for lots more details! #art #mosaic #cutpaper #stencil #blueart #mosaicmonday 090
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025And how does one become part of the starter pack? Did I do that by commenting? (I've never been on twitter - trying to get off instagram & fbook) 100
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 01/02/2025What is a "starter pack?" I'm new to BlueSky, trying to get out of the metaverse, and I don't totally understand how it works. This isn't a feed, what is it? I work mostly in paper collage and printmaking at the moment. I'm not in the UK (oops!) but most of the printmakers whom I follow are. 220
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 31/01/2025Five years ago, when I was living in Newfoundland, there was a massive blizzard. We were all snowed in, driving was impossible, stores were shut. So I made a collage of the view out my window because what else to do? See alt text for details. #collage #art #Newfoundland #snow #snowart #stjohn's 2373
Joy Hecht Arts @joyhechtarts.bsky.social · 31/01/2025It's from Tony's Fishery Solutions on Kenmount Road in St. John's (NL). They don't have a web presence, but seem to sell sporting goods. Looks like perhaps the lid for a bucket sold cheap because their name and phone # are on it. Cool that it washed up in Cornwall! 100
