"Tonight, on the tenth month since the collapse of the canopy in Novi Sad, after citizens peacefully paid their respects at the railway station and were returning home, the gendarmerie, without any cause, launched an attack on the people near the campus. Those walking down the street were beaten with batons; many sustained injuries and ended up in the emergency center.

This is not an incident. This is consciously fabricated police violence, orchestrated precisely on this day, as a message that the state forgives neither memory, nor dignity, nor freedom.

It is clear that someone, hidden away in a dark room, is counting how many thousands of people came out to the streets tonight. It is also clear that this same person cannot and will not understand that his end has come. The only thing left to him is the baton, which throughout history has always been the last weapon of a frightened regime."
