It’s quite funny that the global financial meltdown is taking the exact path for which I predicted it would a few months ago, not to stroke my ego and financial acumen too much

Controversial take alert; while I feel an amount of catharsis seeing a Nazi child being punched, it’s probably not good to be celebrating the puncher as a hero. He can be in the right and have been justified while not painting the altercation as a triumph of good over evil.

Dropping cheese at Melania sounds like some weird slang that means like beefing with, for some reason, or like dissing. I don’t know I will use this in my vocabulary from now on.

Rare stancil agreement: the ny dnc machine is corrupt as shit and to be effective within it you have to make compromises or you will be squashed. The main thing being you need to get your agenda done to be reelected which only happens with compromise with the state. Thems the rules of the game.

What matters is inherently a question of what narrative you want to prioritize because you are narrativizing data when you make value judgements about consumer welfare. Any mismatch therein is a result of the data not capturing the full breadth of conditions humans use to judge the economy.
000
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
The issue is “what matters” makes value judgements of subjective experiences. Consumer spending nor job market conditions nor unemployment nor any of the other traditional consumer welfare measures can actively measure what is in effect a persons subjective experience.

Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
They are objective in the sense that they measure objective measurable data but subjective in the sense that they can be used to make a subjective judgement of the welfare of the population.
100
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
I’m trying to say here is that if you treat consumer welfare as analogous to the headline consumer spending numbers you won’t find anything wrong but there are other objective indications you can look at. It’s a conscious political choice not to because economics is inherently political.

How about expanded auto loan debt and purchasing a new car more and more requiring taking out longer term loans due to inflated prices and long terms, how about the explosion of payday lending platforms and buy now pay later services.
220
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
How about a further restricting of class mobility due to interest rates being high at the same time as asset prices are near record. what about the non insignificant number of people who live in local housing markets that stray significantly from the average markets who have been squeezed more?
110
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
You can also point to a massive expansion in consumer gambling which is treated in aggregates as consumption while spending while almost exclusively creating precarity with zero real upsides to the gambler. How about the dissonance between stock market gains and most people’s quality of life?
110
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
And bringing up agregate consumer spending and other standard economic measures as an “objective proof” people’s lives got significantly better is not actually proof people’s lives got significantly better because aggregate indicators are not measuring subjective experience.
120
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
It largely got better for asset owners and homebuyers while remaining precarious for most other people because while labor gained ground it wasn’t enough to offset inflation. It’s not hard to find if you aren’t ideologically motivated to act like the economy got significantly better under Biden
110
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 06/02/2026
You can look at inflation and the expansion of consumer debt to shore up for more or less stagnant wages. The housing market boomed over those years which is a large part of how the economy is percieved, and most people have more or less stagnated while the wealthiest have doubled their wealth
110
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
And that’s the issue, leaving it to the market you cant just devalue housing stock because then labor produces less profit so you aren’t actually incentivized to produce the type of housing the country needs. Abundance is a movement meant to pretend there is a market solution to a social issue.
010
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
So long as you keep treating it as such incentives align such that prices never meaningfully go down because if you keep lending rules loose while adding supply you can instantly convert that housing into profit for developers while not lowering prices. Otherwise homes would be much cheaper.
110
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
And keeping them off the market such they don’t have to realize the losses. The housing market would crash immediately if it became more expensive to borrow to buy a house, the limiting factor is not on the supply, except in some very specific markets. It’s a problem with housing as an asset.
100
Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
Yglesias, always the terrible pundit again commits the same logical leap as every other abundance lib and mainstream dem by refusing to describe the housing crisis as it is. There is plenty of supply sitting on the market, the issue is that many people are sitting on negative equity on homes

Part of the reason we are in this position in the first place is a lack of political imagination among the gerentocratic democratic establishment who consistently stand in the way of progress which had enacted could have staved off the trump era. They need to go just as much as the gop.

There are many very good reasons to be pissed at Biden and the Democratic Party but the ride or die blue maga types want unquestioning loyalty to a failing party bureaucracy that time and again fails to meet the moment and gets complacent when they are given power. We don’t criticize Biden enough.

I really love the constant “China is economically struggling” chest beating by western financial press because an economically struggling country doesn’t build out capacity this quickly and drastically. Seems more like our economic theories are dogshit at analyzing real economies.

There's a prison revolt at a concentration camp in Texas in solidarity with Minneapolis:

Jazmine Ulloa

Hundreds of immigrant mothers and children detained at a South Texas facility on Saturday protested the killing of a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis, chanting "Let me out" and "Libertad," or "Liberty," according to an immigration lawyer who witnessed the demonstration.

Eric Lee, the lawyer, said he had been waiting for his client in the visitation area of the family detention center in Dilley, Tex., when detention officials abruptly asked him to leave. Once outside, he peered through a chain-link fence and saw hundreds of women and children walking out of the facility and chanting in protest.

Lee said his client later told him on the phone that he and other detainees were outraged over the latest killing in Minneapolis and the detention of Liam Conejo Ramos, the 5-year-old boy from Ecuador detained with his father in Minneapolis and sent to Texas.

I suppose it has asml which of course isn’t nothing but if Chinas advances are anything to believe that just buys them time, none of this mentions internal instability. Canada got the memo but in true European fashion they think they can defy gravity.

The eu can barely keep itself together and there is a separatist far right gaining prominence in most countries currently, with one of its members already a consolidated authoritarian regime that doesn’t play along, and it believes it can govern as a monolithic superpower?

I am baffled by eu geopolitical strategy. It traditionally saw Itself as an extension of the western coalition, dependent on American finance for its economies. Now it needs to find a place in a new order and it is… shutting out both America and China?

Were these types of events broadly successful we would not have the problems they discuss every year, and they can blame policymakers all they want but their class largely controls the outcome of policy making so it’s not a particularly cogent critique.

Josie ジョシー 🇵🇸 @josieweather.bsky.social · 21/01/2026
Sociologists mostly categorize Davos and similar events not as attempts to solve collective problems but as a way for elites who benefit from the problems in society to offer solutions that don’t conflict with their own wealth and power to maintain cognitive dissonance.
