I'm not really in the target demo, I think if I was going to build something like this I'd do it in code. But I totally did stuff like this as a kid and I'm glad the option will remain!

I was recently introduced to straw.page, a maximalist Geocities-inspired drag-and-drop website builder. Apparently it's most popular with Gen Z, and it makes me so glad to know this sort of spirit lives on. 😄 🧵 A few examples in-thread.

Actually I did find one advantage of `corner-shape` over `border-shape`: with `corner-shape`, we can apply different colours to top/left/right/bottom borders. Honestly it doesn't work exactly the way I'd want with `corner-shape`, but AFAICT `border-shape` borders are always a single solid colour.

Extracting Grid Information Using CSS
It's an interesting and potentially useful trick to have an element know where it is on a grid. That's tricky enough when the items are in one row/column, but what about when they span?

Yeah, that makes a ton of sense for the stuff you do! It's fun seeing what new shapes can be constructed with full-radius corners. I think `corner-shape: scoop` could be used to make sparkle-type shapes like "✨" 😄

Truthfully I'm not the right person to be giving advice on this, since I haven't worked as an IC in years. I think if I was earlier in my career, I would consider pivoting to focus on AI engineering itself (RAG, harnesses, MCP, etc). That seems to be where a lot of opportunity is right now.

Josh W. Comeau @joshwcomeau.com · 14/09/2026
That said, it's tricky because I think a lot of companies are still operating under the assumption that AI tools will continue to improve and that soon we won't need skilled developers at all. And I don't know how long it'll be until things change. 😕

Hi there! I think that the most successful developers right now are those who have a deep understanding of the underlying technology (HTML/CSS/JS and whatever frameworks/libraries) and who have taken the time to get the hang of agentic workflows. I wrote a newsletter about this earlier this year:

border-shape* 😂

Josh W. Comeau @joshwcomeau.com · 14/09/2026
Although really I could probably spend a few minutes coming up with 3-4 reusable border shapes and then they'd be equally easy to use. So maybe this isn't that strong of an advantage 😅

Josh W. Comeau @joshwcomeau.com · 14/09/2026
I think the benefit of corner-shape is ease of use. I've been using corner-shape: bevel a bunch, using the long form syntax to control the angles of the bevels. I could do it with border-shape, but it would be more laborious.

That was essentially my strategy with CSS for JavaScript Developers. Many of the explanations and analogies in the course are JS-based. For example, I explain the cascade by comparing it to JS spread syntax: const appliedStyles = { ...tagStyles, ...classStyles, ...idStyles, };

Love this project from @kaleidosium.my.id. It's an introduction to HTML/CSS specifically for artists. 😄 Tailored educational resources like this are the best. We can construct way better explanations for things when we can anchor it to a shared fundamental base of knowledge, vs. a general audience.
