Finally, we find that among married respondents, answers to the role-reversed statements predict the within-couple income gap even holding fixed the answer to the standard statement. Standard statements alone miss this variation.

3. We find responses to the standard statements also pick up other views. Among those who expect society to agree that women need children in order to be fulfilled, about 40% also expect society to agree when asked about men.

2. Across all questions about half of the sample change their responses when the gender in the statement changes. That is, about half of the sample does not expect society to hold *gender-neutral* views even if they do not expect it to endorse traditional ideas outright

In isolation, this may lead some to believe gender views don't constrain women working However, our paired responses tell a different story: half of the sample gives a different response when asked about whether society thinks children suffer when fathers work for pay

Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
We find three things: 1. Standard statements alone indicate that relatively few respondents expect society to hold traditional gender views For example, only 19% think society agrees or strongly agrees that children suffer when a mother works for pay
100
Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
To fill this gap we field a representative, probability-based sample of Americans with @norc.org. We ask respondents what society believes about 17 statements drawn from the WVS and the GSS as well as the role-reversed version of the statement (e.g. what happens when fathers work)

Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
(2) Without parallel statements about men, we may risk misattributing other views to gender Suppose a respondent believes society thinks women need children to be fulfilled Interpretation is very different if they think society believes men also need children vs only women do
100
Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
(1) It hides disparities in *relative* views, which may matter for household decision making. A household may believe society supports women working, yet anticipate judgment if the man only works part time or stays home These gender views may still constrain women working

Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Excited our new paper is out! It starts from the observation that most surveys about gender views ask about statements like "When a mother works for pay, the children suffer" And never "When a father works for pay, the children suffer" This creates at least two problems 🧵

🆕 Why workers avoid unfamiliar neighbourhoods – and how one visit can help eliminate fears Today on VoxDev, Josh Dean (University of Chicago), Gabriel Kreindler (Harvard University) & Oluchi Mbonu (World Bank) discuss barriers to job search in Nairobi: ow.ly/eHPL50ZFYqG

Why workers avoid unfamiliar neighbourhoods – and how one visit can help eliminate fears
A field experiment with casual workers in Nairobi finds that people are reluctant to work in unfamiliar parts of their own city. A single visit to an unfamiliar neighbourhood is enough to eliminate this aversion.

Subsidies for clean cookstoves can abate carbon dioxide at only $7 per ton of CO2. We account for issues like imperfect additionality, stove breakage rates, non-usage or low usage by some buyers, and others. Read my article with @joshtdean.bsky.social in Climate Change Economics: lnkd.in/gw8hr9Mu

I think of it as analogous to basic science research vs engineering. Both I think are important and provide their own kinds of returns.

The hope is that understanding things like if and why people don’t like visiting new places provides transportable insights about human behavior that we couldn’t have gotten from other, more bundled, labor market type impact evaluations.

As one of the potential sources of this kind of frustration, I think the positive case for this kind of work is that it hopefully has better external validity properties than a pure impact evaluation.

Suppose we then have attrition correlated with D. Lee Bounds logic suggests we should drop the individuals that pull up the ratios the most for one bound and individuals who pull down the ratios the most for the other bound. Is that kosher? Is there a better approach?
000
Josh Dean @joshtdean.bsky.social · 20/08/2025
Specifically, let D be binary treatment. We estimate preferences over binary options Y_1 and Y_2 with attributes (X_1,Z_1) and (X_2,Z_2) as follows: P(Y_1>Y_2)=Beta_1*(X_1-X_2)+Beta_2*D*(X_1-X_2)+Beta_3*(Z_1-Z_2) We are interested in Beta_1/Beta_3 and Beta_2/Beta_3

It seems like most firms haven't adjusted pricing yet in response to impending tariffs (e.g. I think apple prices are the same). That seems odd. Price of replacing inventory is about to shoot up. Theories? Firms are worried about backlash if they do it before they "have" to?

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you do not have an obligation to spend today scrolling and reading about what went wrong. It won’t change the results, and I bet you won’t find real answers. Sometimes the best response to bad things is to think about other good things.

I’d bet the main factor is how you react to amazing opportunities that have massive uncertainty. If you are someone who can relax and say “wow this is amazing!” you’ll feel great. If you’re someone whose first instinct is to worry about losing the chance, not so much.

At least in my experience, the first order mental health issue in a PhD is not really about finding the task hard or unpleasant. I loved the task. That’s exactly what made the PhD hard. Constant fear that it was about to be ripped away because I wasn’t good enough.

Can cookstove subsidies reduce CO2 emissions? @joshtdean.bsky.social and I wrote an overview of our research demonstrating that @BurnMfg's Jikokoa/EOCA Char stoves cut 3.5 tons of CO2 - and save $120 in fuel - per household per year. Read more here: linkedin.com/posts/activi...
Policymakers can support sustainable development by providing subsidies or financing for energy efficient technologies among low-income households.

The Jikokoa cookstove costs $40 but saves $120 per year in fuel savings, generating a large return on investment.

3.5 tons is the potential amount of CO2e the stove reduces each year from the production, transport, and burning of charcoal.

But what do these numbers mean? 1) Every 10 dB(A) increase is perceived as twice as loud. So the electric here is less than half as loud as the gas. 2) OSHA's safety limit for the gas (102 at source) is 1-2 hours of exposure. The electric (84.6) is more than 8 hours
