HIIT is superior for losing fat and keeping muscle in older adults vs. moderate- or low-intensity exercise. New 6-month study finds the HIIT group retained ~1.5 lbs MORE lean mass than moderate cardio, despite similar fat loss. HIIT = Lose FAT. Keep MUSCLE.

The word "DIET" literally translates to "a way of life" from the Ancient Greek word "diaita". Diets today are seen as unsustainable, painful periods of self-deprivation to get abs for summer. Make your diet a permanent foundational "way of life" for long term nutrition.

Kimchi can literally help trap and flush out nanoplastics from your body. Its good bacteria acts like a "sticky" magnet to nanoplastics in your gut. Binding to them helps prevent absorption into your bloodstream. And then flushes them out. This giant jar is only $8 at Costco.

Costco's chargrilled chipotle chicken is only $11.99 and has 160g protein. Pre-cooked so just have to heat it up. Meal prep into 4 bowls you'll get 40g protein at $3 a bowl. Tastes a lot like Chipotle's chicken... but no skimping on the meat! lol

Swap whole eggs for egg whites to drop body fat. Makes it easy to hit your daily high protein target without driving up fat calories. 30g egg white protein = 150 calories 30g whole egg protein = 360 calories High satiety + High Protein = most powerful fat loss hack

"Exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate." - Lee Haney The best workouts don't destroy you. They give your muscles enough stimulus to grow while still recovering well enough to train again. Soreness isn't the goal. Adaptation is.

“You can’t out-train a bad diet” is well known, but here’s one that’s just as important: You can’t out-train chronic stress or sleep deprivation. Stress can double workout recovery time & injury risk. Poor sleep wrecks nutrient partitioning, leading to more fat & less muscle.

Waiting for "spare time" to work out leaves you with a "spare tire." Remove decision making + willpower from the equation. Schedule a workout routine so it stops feeling like a choice & becomes your automatic system.

Walking for weight loss? You don’t need 10,000 steps a day to see results. A new study found just 8,500 steps/day was enough to help people lose weight and keep it off vs. those who didn’t. Walking works because it’s sustainable. Aim for 5–7 days/week.

New study: Extra Virgin Olive Oil boosts brain & gut health. Polyphenols feed good gut bacteria → they produce metabolites that regulate brain chemistry. Standard efined olive oil loses these compounds in processing. Your brain is 60% fat. Feed it the good stuff.

Fruit is good for you, but how you eat it affects hunger. Drinking it removes fiber & skips chewing (two of the biggest fullness signals) You can drink a ton of calories from juice & still feel hungry. Same apple but different effect. Whole apple > applesauce > apple juice

New study finds you can gain weight from bread… even if you're NOT eating more calories. Mice ate the same but gained more fat on carb-heavy diets → burned fewer calories (slower metabolism). Don't base meals on refined carbs alone. Prioritize protein + balanced meals

Hara hachi bu: Stop eating at 80% full. This simple Japanese habit from Okinawa’s longest-living people helps you without dieting or feeling deprived. It naturally cuts calories, reduces overeating, and helps you actually enjoy food again. Stop at “comfortably satisfied”, not stuffed.

These 2 are better than any probiotic you can buy. And got both for less than $20 at Costco. Sauerkraut + kimchi are gut health superchargers

Protein before or after workouts? Depends on when you last ate. Train fasted (4+ hrs since a meal)? Drink protein shake before to reduce muscle breakdown & boost performance. Ate recently? Timing matters less. "Sandwich" your workout between protein meals within ~5 hours.

My favorite canned fish. Convenient, portable, affordable & nutrient dense. High in protein, zero carbs, filling & omega-3s. Try to get 'wild caught' packed with olive oil (no seed oils). Look for BPA-free cans. They're the ultimate fast food. Roll off the top & dine in style!

No exercise will cut you up like sprinting. You zap a lot of fat with short intense bursts. Way more effective than long aerobic activity.

Low-fat & nonfat milk are sugar bombs. When fat is removed you're left with concentrated lactose (milk sugar. Whole milk is lower in carbs so doesn't spike insulin high. More satiating so feel fuller. More nutrient dense. Ideally get grass-fed, raw, unpasteurized whole milk.

Wash your plastic gym water bottle. They breed bacteria if you keep reusing them without washing. A study took 30 gym water bottles & found 83% had bacterial contamination. • Staphylococcus aureus = 27% • E. coli = 17% Best to wash your hands before fixing that gym drink.

Always grab the BACK extra virgin olive oil bottle. Prolonged exposure to LED retail lighting accelerates oxidation. This degrades polyphenols & increases rancidity risk. Bottles in back are at least partially shaded, rotated less & not exposed constantly like ones in front.

Don't avoid full-fat cheese… it can actually help protect your brain. New 25-year study of 27,670 adults: • 50g+ high-fat cheese daily = 13% lower dementia risk • High-fat cream = 16% lower dementia risk • Low-fat dairy? Zero protection. Don't believe the "low fat" lie

Use the "180-Age Formula" to find the ideal heart rate for your cardio workouts. It maximizes fat-burning while minimizing anaerobic stress. In general, you'll build a proper aerobic base at no higher than 180 minus your age. This keeps your body at its "Fat Max" burning stage.

Eliminate the "Big 3" to escape carb dependency... 1. Added sugars 2. Refined grains 3. Industrial seed oils By eliminating these "Big 3" you'll allow your fat-burning genes to upregulate. Transitioning from a sugar-dependent metabolism to a fat-burning engine.

You don't have to work out Christmas Eve or Day. Taking time off to deload can give you better results. A large meta-analysis shows short breaks only cause small VO₂max drops. Real losses take weeks, not days. Christmas is a perfect time for planned (or forced) recovery.

Take 2 tbsp of liquid apple cider vinegar (with "the mother") before a carb-heavy meal. Clinical trials show it can reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes by 31%. ACV pills don't work, has to be liquid. Add to a glass of water & drink thru a straw (so acid doesn't get on teeth).

When lifting weights you should be pushing each set within 1-3 reps of failure. But most people finish a set with 5 more reps they could do. No failure proximity = no results You need mechanical tension for growth. Your body adapts to stress when it's forced to, not comfort.

Stop obsessing with the scale. Focus on body composition, not weight. Science just confirmed: More muscle + less belly fat = younger biological brain age The scale lies. It won't move if you're burning fat & building muscle. But you'll look better, feel better, & think sharper

Cobra Grips are my #1 gym tool this year. Faster than lifting straps, easier to wrap & have built in wrist support. I used to avoid straps to keep my grip strong, but these let you focus on hitting the bigger muscles without burning out your arms first. Less biceps when rowing

No single diet works for everyone. If a diet failed you, then maybe the diet was never built for your physiology. • Protein types need more fat/protein • Carb types need more plant foods & starches • Mixed types need balance It's not the food. It's your metabolic machinery

Josh Schlottman @joshschlottman.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
More fat you have, then faster early progress. Stored fat = stored energy When you lift + eat protein your body uses that stored fat to build muscle. This is why heavier beginners see: • rapid strength gains • visible muscle growth • AND fat loss Body reshaping happens fast

Your body wasn’t built for machines... it was built for movement. Sprints, carries, jumps, swings, slams, throws, pushes, pulls. Train the way humans actually move & you’ll be an athlete without ever stepping on a treadmill.

Lift weights BEFORE doing cardio if your goal is to be a lean machine. Weights first to maximize your strength, power & glycogen. Cardio after will burn more fat now that your heart rate is elevated & glycogen stores are depleted. Build muscle, then burn the fat.

Calcium hydroxyapatite + Vitamin K2/D3 = real tooth remineralization 🦷 Your enamel isn't made of "regular calcium." It's made of hydroxyapatite. This is the bioidentical mineral your teeth need to rebuild micro-damage. D3 boosts absorption. K2 sends calcium into your teeth

Have a bad lower back? Sit less, walk more. Walking creates gentle, rhythmic motion that pumps your spinal discs. This promotes nutrient exchange & reduces stiffness that builds up from sitting too much. Walking is "nature's back balm." Spinal discs rely on motion to breathe.

Fast-paced, low-rest workouts don't build muscle after 40. Separate strength training from conditioning. You need 1-3 minutes rest b/t working sets. So you can recover enough to lift heavy & train close to failure. Train hard. Rest enough. Attack the next set with full intent
000
Josh Schlottman @joshschlottman.bsky.social · 05/11/2025
You don't need more work- but more effort per rep. Excess volume kills your joints, drains your energy & slows recovery. • 3-4 workouts/wk • 2-3 hard sets/exercise • 4-6 total exercises/session • Reps pushed within 1-2 reps of failure Don't chase fatigue. Chase progress
000
Josh Schlottman @joshschlottman.bsky.social · 05/11/2025
The real "danger" after 40 isn't heavy lifting… it's not lifting heavy enough. "Safe" high-rep low-weight workouts are a waste. Your body adapts to what you demand of it. Demand little & it deteriorates. Challenge it intelligently- it stays strong, lean & capable for decades.
000
Josh Schlottman @joshschlottman.bsky.social · 05/11/2025
Switching exercises every workout is killing your gains. You're not "confusing your muscles." You're confusing your progress. Repetition builds mastery. Mastery builds muscle. Pick 5-6 core exercises. Stick with them for 8-12 weeks Strategic repetition = measurable strength

Lots of guys over 40 make the mistake of getting OCD about perfect form with 5 lb weights. Yes, form matters but you can't squeeze your way to muscle growth. The sweet spot = Great form + training close to failure (1-2 reps shy) + progressive overload
