There are no tools which can do this reliably, and it will get harder to tell over time. It’s like trying to make a tool to objectively measure “quality”. It’s inherently subjective

I hope all of this rust code will help you with your own projects. If you have other devices you want the e-reader to run on, please let me know.

In a separate (currently private) repo I'm working on an e-reader app which will work on anything with a functioning epaper driver, which is what you see in the photo above. It can render text files and epubs from Project Gutenberg, with some minimal power control. That repo will be public soon.

Use of AI for coding is controversial, but I feel like this is one of the sweet spots: have the AI research other codebases & PDFs to reverse engineer under-documented hardware. The final code isn't good, but it works, and gives me a base to write a proper driver.

I got this device last year but didn't know enough about epaper to get rust drawing to the scene, even after reading through the C++ example code. This year, thanks to some heavy Claude prompting, I was able to get a prototype driver up and running. It's super slow and clunky, but it does work.

Used Claude recently on a Rust project and it feels like it's been getting slower. This wasn't a big project (compared to the big Java projects I do at work, anyway), but it was definitely putting a lot of pressure on the context size. I wonder if Rust just requires more tokens than Java & JS.

Our country is in an emotional recession. None of our systems work anymore. They still don’t work the way they used to before Covid. There’s weird shortages crazy hyper optimizations. Back in the Barack Obama era it was “Yes We Can”. Now I think we’re in the era of “No We Can’t.”
