This is really just a test to see if my social media scheduler will send alt text. We'll see! But I'll probably leave it up, anyway. So check out this cool tattoo design!

I got super-nerdy and put together a catalogue of ink swatches for every color I own so I can design tattoos using real color palettes. Freakin' genius. I know.

My wife got me this cool shirt by @meganroseruiz.bsky.social for my birthday. Cucumbers are from our garden. They happened to be sitting on the counter next to the shirt and I thought they were appropriate.

'tis my birthday! Or, as my middle child spelled it in the card she made for me: berftae. And since it's my berftae, I would like to humbly submit my artworks for your sharing consideration. :) Look at me, look at me! And check out my writing/portfolio/stuff at joshj.blog Thanks!

My new favorite early composition method is doing Notan designs -- simple value breakdowns. Once I have light/dark that looks nice, I add super-saturated red to note the focal point. Make it look good at this stage and the rest is a lot easier.

My favorite warmup exercise for drawing (whether it's for tattoos or illustrations) is definitely good ol' gesture drawing. Filling a page with little 1-minute gestures helps me loosen up and dip into flow before I start working on the "big stuff."

The World. I redesigned the last tarot card of the Major Arcana because I really wasn't satisfied with the first one. I think I've found a balance between drawing and painting that I really enjoy.

Hello #PortfolioDay! I'm Josh. An illustrator and tattoo artist. Currently building a world (and tarot deck at the same time). I love fantasy art and comics. :) I'm excited to be able to post more than 4 images this time. 😅 See more @ joshj.blog

I've been super excited about 3d printing lately. And I decided I wanted to try my hand at model painting. So I've been playing around with an airbrush and some high-quality acrylic paints to see what happens. Here's my first statue…so far.

A 3d print of a bust statue of Vecna from Stranger Things, with a coat of gray and green paints as a base coat. Held in-hand in front of a wooden table with paint brushes and a rinse cup in the background.

A little page from the sketchbook. And a reminder that as we're rolling into Summer, I spend most of my time with the kiddos and on the farm. I'll only be in the studio when there's an appointment on my calendar, and if you book a virtual consult, that saves me the travel time!

I finished up the next tarot card in the deck yesterday. That's 5 cards down! Just...a bunch more to go! 😅 I have a couple of other older pieces that I can also turn into cards in the set. I might just have to update those to match the rest.

I had so much fun working on this one! I think I've finally found a repeatable process that I can use for making a comic. Yeah. Next up, I'll be tackling The High Priestess. #Tarot #FantasyArt #WorldBuilding #DigitalArt #Art #Artist #Illustration

Digital illustration of a dark-skinned man with three glowing eyes in fantasy attire, holding a staff and a book. He's wearing a hooded cloak, tunic, and a white mask on is attached to his hip. The staff has a curved blade at the top and the book is bound. Background is a sky with clouds and floating islands.

A tarot card design with the Roman Numeral 1 ( I ) and "The Magus" printed beneath it. The illustration is a dark-skinned man with three glowing eyes in fantasy attire, holding a staff and a book. He's wearing a hooded cloak, tunic, and a white mask on is attached to his hip. The staff has a curved blade at the top and the book is bound. Background is a sky with clouds and floating islands.

A little bit of progress on my "The World" tarot card for today. It's just a sketch, but I've been pecking away at it slowly. This is a different approach that I hope still conveys completion and nirvana -- The World in Her Embrace.

Black-and-white sketch of a woman (Rane) embracing a younger girl (Kyra), depicting a tender moment between mother and daughter, with a sunburst pattern in the background.

Apple Pencil is still in transit (will hopefully be delivered on Friday), so I figured I'd repost one of my favorite pieces for my Wednesday Blood Oath. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year's Eve! I'll probably be in bed before the ball drops...

I provide the best aftercare I've been able to find, for free. From Saniderm to Hustle Butter. But I don't do it for entirely unselfish reasons. The better your aftercare is, the better your tattoo heals. And a tattoo that heals well is good marketing for me.

I'm harder on myself than anyone else ever could be. I still do this little self-critique with every tattoo. Feel free to steal it and use with whatever craft you happen to practice. It works with almost anything. Just replace "tattoo" with whatever. ☺️

Haley is working through the last weekend of her practicum! I wanted to take a moment to compliment my amazing wife on her incredible effort over the past year and a half. She's intelligent, driven, and gorgeous. The total package. I'm a lucky guy.

Here it is. The finished-as-it-gets environment design I did for a contest this month. One Last Adventure. #Art #FantasyArt #EnvironmentArt #DigitalArt

An old man and his dog look out over a fantasy autumn landscape with waterfalls, floating rock islands in the sky, and fall colors everywhere.

Well...I'm changing things up last-minute on this design. I think I like the lower perspective with the bigger mountain. :) I'm gonna roll with it. #Art #Artist #FantasyArt #DigitalArt #Landscape #EnvironmentDesign

An old man with a backpack standing next to a dog look into a fantastical landscape with a large mountain in the distance. There is a hole in the mountain and a large floating rock island in the sky has a waterfall pouring into a river below. There is a lot of mist, fall colors, and other floating rocks in the sky.

Hallo. I'm Josh. It's also my birfday. Gettin' old and stuff. I like fantasy art. Here's some of my stuff (With alt text). Thank you for the artshare, and Happy Birthday again. :D

A faerie with red hair on an abstract green background that suggests leaves. She is wearing revealing brown clothing that has gold art nouveau inspired accents, and has a gold chain earring. There are "motes" of light floating around her.

A Leanan Sidhe (dark fae muse) floats in an ethereal space. She has elongated, pointed ears and an otherworldly gaze and pale eyes. Flowing hair and a billowing robe give her a spectral presence. She clutches a dark, heart-shaped object close to her chest, as if guarding it. In the background she is framed by a large circular frame with an art nouveau motif of a blooming magnolia alternating with skulls.

A beautiful young woman with dark hair, freckles, and blue eyes is looking at the viewer, standing in front of a broken mirror with an art nouveau styled frame. Her reflection in the mirror has more severe features and pale skin, it is looking over its shoulder and also looking at the viewer with a smile on its face.

An illustration of a redheaded, muscular woman in revealing adventurer’s clothing exploring a crypt with a small blue animal perched on her shoulder. She is carrying a torch that is casting light on small orange monsters that are eating the remains off of a skeleton silhouette in the foreground.

A work-in-progress illustration of a fall landscape with a mountain in the distance and a body of water in the foreground. There are floating islands in the sky, one of them in the center of the hole in the distant mountain, with a waterfall coming out of the island inside the mountain. A man and his dog are silhouetted in the foreground, looking into the scene.

So...I did something SUPER nerdy last night and set up my "Ideals, Goals, and Projects" as something a little more fantasy-ish. Campaigns are lifelong goals. Adventures are big goals that take longer than 3 months. Quests are projects that make up adventures. Or one-off side-quests. Genuis? Yes.

Man...working on this one has taken WAY longer than I expected it to, but I'm getting tons of good footage out of it! LoL A little more #WIP for Ms. Roxanna and her tiny noble companion. #Art #Artist #FantasyArt #DigitalArt #RedheadsRock

A fantasy-style painting of a muscular red-haired woman in a green cloak holding a torch inside a rocky cavern. She wears a revealing adventurer’s outfit with a belt and bracers, and a small blue creature perches on her raised arm. Around her, several orange, furry creatures with dark markings crawl on the rocks, watching her. The lighting from the torch casts warm highlights against the cool purples and blues of the cave.
