Follow @babazoya.health to stay ahead with your healthThe first lab-grown meat ever sold in a US grocery store landed on a Berkeley, California shelf on November 1, 2025. Mission Barns cultivated pork meatballs, $13.99 per pack at Berkeley Bowl West. Sprouts Bay Area locations picked it up later in Q4 2025. As of June 2026, five lab-grown meat companies have been cleared by the FDA: UPSIDE Foods, GOOD Meat, Mission Barns, Wildtype, and Believer Meats. Seven US states have banned or restricted it. Tyson Foods, the primary chicken supplier for KFC and Taco Bell, has been funding the technology since January 2018.UPSIDE Foods’ own FDA memo (CCC 000002) discloses that their starting cells are immortalized using TERT, the chicken’s own telomerase gene. TERT is the same gene that is dysregulated in human cancer tumors. The cells are grown in stainless steel bioreactors fed a soup of growth factors and insulin.
