We are hoping that the fire conditions warrant a lifting of the evacuation order soon so that we can go back. We are fortunate that the house is still intact, but many aren't so fortunate, please consider giving if you can via the links above.

The rest of the fam is back in ATX, but I'm still in BC waiting (along with many others) to be able to get back in to get our stuff to head home. Luckily we listened to officials and created a go bag that allowed us to get out in a matter of minutes: www.ready.gov/kit

Long story short, we were up in BC visiting the grandparents when the fire started at around 5pm on Friday (8/7) and by 2:30am on Saturday (8/8) they called for the full evacuation of ~20k people, including the entire District of Summerland.

(Just Josh talking now) - diff talk for a diff day, but b/c of TX's connect and manage approach to building out the grid, we need to build out these large tranches of transmission from time to time to keep the Texas Miracle, which is the envy of every other state, going.
010
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Note that, while data centers get all of the attention today, the STEP lines were originally designed and approved to electrify O&G operations in West TX. But b/c transmission lines are nondiscriminatory and open-access, they will serve all load.
110
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Next we used the Jobs and Economic Development Impact (JEDI) model from the @NatLabRockies to assess the construction and operations impacts of the lines and find billions in local and regional economic activity from both.
100
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
With the exact same generation resources, adding the 765kV lines lets the model serve ~5.5 TWh more load. Depending on the value of that otherwise-unserved energy, which appears high today, that results in $2.6B to $190B in net benefits in 2031 alone.
100
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
We next constrained the model to build out only the generation resources that are currently in the ERCOT Generator Interconnection Queue (GIS) w/ and w/o the STEP lines. This restriction meant that the model built the same generation mix b/c it needed all that it could get.
100
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
We find that the model can better site generation resources when it has access to more transmission.
100
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
We start by modeling the PUCT-approved STEP lines (+ Hillje-Euclid) using the GenX electric grid modeling platform all the way out to 2050 under expected load growth.
100
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
tl;dr - the 765kV STEP lines unlock better-sited generation, serve 5–6 TWh more load (~$25–30B value), create ~100k construction jobs + $10B regional value, and support ~3k annual jobs, $300M/yr in property taxes, lower emissions, and reduced water use.

SPECIAL REPORT: Texas Feels the Iran Oil Shock with Michael Webber
Even with more domestic energy production, Texas is still exposed to global oil shocks, higher fuel costs, and infrastructure limits triggered by the war in Iran.
010
Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
Texas produces a lot of light sweet crude, but Gulf Coast refineries were built for heavier imports. In a conflict tied to Middle East oil flows, that mismatch helps explain why Texas fuel prices remain exposed to global disruption.

The U.S. grid isn’t one electricity market. Regions like ERCOT, PJM, and CAISO all run different systems with different rules for pricing & reliability. Max Kanter explains how GridStatus data can act as a ground source of truth, allowing different constituencies to have conversations about energy

Joshua D. Rhodes @joshdr83.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
Electricity doesn’t have one price. It has 70,000+ nodes. Max Kanter explains nodal pricing, and why GridStatus mapped 20,000+ nodes with 5-minute updates. Texas congestion and “market outcomes” look different at the node.

New episode of the pod is live! I spoke with Andrew Reimers, ERCOT’s Independent Market Monitor, about what makes the IMM role distinct in Texas. We cover ERCOT’s isolation, independent oversight, and how that context shapes debates over reserves, DRRS, RUC, and NPRR 1309 vs 1310.
