Photosynthetic optimum temperature plays a minor role in the increase of terrestrial carbon uptake from 2000 to 2019
Recent increases in terrestrial carbon uptake are often assumed to reflect thermal acclimation. Using global eddy-covariance and satellite observations, Xu et al. show that maximum ecosystem photosynthesis increased without a global rise in optimum temperature. Instead, stomatal regulation and canopy development played larger roles, especially under dryness, suggesting that future land carbon projections must go beyond thermal acclimation alone.

Our global study indicates that thermal acclimation contributes less to rising photosynthesis at the ecosystem scale than previously estimated. Increasing water use efficiency and canopy development sustained most of the terrestrial carbon uptake. doi.org/10.1016/j.on...

Our new findings from field experiments show that aridity in Mediterranean drylands limits productivity more than decomposition, which remains relatively high under dry conditions because of high litter quality and abiotic decay mechanisms. doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Trade‐offs among restored ecosystem functions are context‐dependent in Mediterranean‐type regions
Global biodiversity hotspots, including Mediterranean-type ecosystems worldwide, are highly threatened by global change that alters biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and services. Some restoration a....
