The photographs that mattered most to me emerged after the classic scene had been captured. A passing storm, a rainbow, and a morning spent studying the water's surface led me toward images that were less about place and more about perception.

Conditions in the Ashburton Lakes basin turned volatile just after sunrise. Light and shadow traded place by the minute, with fleeting glimpses of a rainbow and pockets of sunlit gold breaking through the heavy mountain cloud.
