Nataliya Tod & coauthors used high-resolution diffusion tensor MRI and simulation work to investigate collagen fiber architecture and glycosaminoglycan changes in knee cartilage after medial meniscus destabilization: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Representative histology sections (b, e, g–j, m–p), their Modified Mankin scores (MMS, c, f), and the corresponding b0 images (a, d) in the medial knee compartment as well as the representative 3D tractography of a SHAM and DMM sample (k, l). The MMS values depicted were determined by assigning a score to the femoral and tibial cartilage for three consecutive sections, one of which is shown adjacent to the scores (b, e). The average of these three was reported here. Toluidine blue magnified images (g–j) are from the solid black (SHAM) and dashed black (DMM) boxes shown in b and e. The green arrow, white asterisk, and white arrow on DMM tibial cartilage highlight the roughened surface and cracks, the cellular disorganization, and the disrupted tidemark integrity, respectively. Picrosirius red magnified images (m–p) are from approximately the same boxed regions on an adjacent PSR stained sections. Black arrows highlight the organization of the SHAM tibial cartilage. The tractography images (k, l) show the 3D collagen fiber network for both the femur and tibia, primarily the central part (blue and red boxes shown in a and d). FC: femoral cartilage; TC: tibial cartilage; RZ: radial zone; SZ: superficial zone.

Peter W. Kurtz, Annsley Mace, Charley M. Goodwin, Jeremy L. Gilbert studied the effect of implant size on fretting currents of acetabular cup-liner tapers during in vitro cyclic loading: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
(A) A summary plot from one test (44 mm sample), which shows the analyzed baseline currents, the fretting currents and the difference between these, which yields the net fretting currents. (B) a 1 s sampling of the baseline currents while cyclic loading was paused. (C) One second of total currents sampled while cyclically loading. Note the 9 Hz current response in sync with the applied cyclic load. The average current of two baseline points (B), one before and after five fretting points, was subtracted from the average of the five fretting points (C) to calculate the net fretting currents (total current minus the baseline current).

Representative underestimation of bone defects according to underlying bone morphology. Two selected right shoulders were reconstructed in 3D and rotated to display the glenoid surface en face, as well as laid flat. The depth-based projection map was overlaid onto its respective glenoid for two representative participant for which the 15% anterior (A) and posterior (B) bone defect (shaded) was significantly underestimated. Extracts from Figure 5 are shown in the right upper corner, highlighting the representative participant. The area of simulated defect is shaded onto the depth-based projection map ((A), anterior; (B), posterior). The glenoid was then laid flat (bottom right) to provide a better look at bony morphology and appreciate the discrepancy in bone stock underlying the simulated defect, highlighted by the stars.

Marc Teitelbaum & coauthors found that COX-2 expressed by osteoclasts along the chondro-osseous junction promotes vasculogenesis and regulates chondrocyte hypertrophy during endochondral ossification: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Callus bone formation in the absence of osteoclast COX-2 expression. Longitudinal sections from 21 dpf mouse femur fracture calluses were stained with Masson's trichrome (A, B, C, scale bar 100 µm) or used to detect CTSK (D, E, F), COX-2 (G, H, I), or Sp7 (J, K, L) by immunohistochemistry (scale bar 20 µm). Specimens were from WT (A, D, G, J), Lyz2cre/cre (B, E, H, K), and Ptgs2-cKOLyz2 (C, F, I, L) mice. The fracture site is located near the bottom right corner (X) of Masson's trichrome stained images. New bone formation in the callus (blue) is detected along the periosteum, within the callus, and at the muscle boundary for all genotypes (A, B, C). Osteoclasts (black arrowheads) expressing CTSK were abundant along the peripheral edges of newly formed bone next to the muscle boundary for all genotypes (D, E, F). Osteoblasts (red arrowheads) expressing COX-2 (G, H, I) or Sp7 (J, K, L) were abundant in all genotypes. In contrast, osteoclasts (black arrowheads) expressing COX-2 were only detected in the WT (G) and Lyz2cre/cre (H) calluses with reduced or absent COX-2 expression in the Ptgs2-cKOLyz2 callus (I).

Skin swab samples were collected at three distinct timepoints: (1) during initial treatment and washing, (2) during continued washing (recovery phase), and (3) during final treatment and washing.

Marco Zucchet & coauthors present findings that could streamline the design process for developing stems for femoral revision surgeries: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Parameters of interest for the present study: the three-dimensional angle between the proximal and isthmus axes α, the distance between the isthmus cross-section and proximal-isthmus axis tilting point DTI, the distance between the head center and isthmus cross-section DHI and the distance between the head center and tilting point DHT. The proximal and isthmus axes and the proximal isthmus axis tilting point are shown as well as the isthmus cross-section, head center and greater trochanter landmark. The distances DHI, DTI and DHT are projected along the proximal axis.

Zongpan Li & coauthors performed a quantitative assessment of knee pain and proprioception in tibial rotation in individuals with knee osteoarthritis: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Equipment and experimental setup. Participants sit on the robotic-controlled device with hip and knee flexed at 90° and ankle immobilized by an Ankle Brace. A (6-degree-of-freedom) 6-DOF Knee Goniometer is firmly strapped to the lateral thigh and attached anteromedially to the flat surface of tibia by a Shank Brace. The thigh is stabilized by a customized Thigh Stabilizer. The Pivoting Motor slowly (0.5°/sec) and passively rotates the tibia (with the ankle/foot as a whole) by pivoting the Footplate. Starting from zero position, the tibia is rotated randomly to internal/external rotation to test the threshold angle of knee pain/proprioception by clicking the Handheld Switch.
