🚰 If we want future generations to rely on clean groundwater that only needs limited treatment, we need to better our groundwater resources! 💶 No matter how fast we act now, we will have to invest in advanced treatment technologies at some Danish waterworks and this will cost the water consumers

💧 No need to be worried in areas that currently exceed the 6 mg/L: this is not an acute health risk! 💧 If you want to lower your risk of colorectal cancer, follow the common guidelines, see www.cancer.dk/tyktarmskrae...

💧 It's great news for public health that the Ministry of the Environment promised to follow the experts commission's recommendation to lower the drinking water nitrate standard from 50 to 6 mg/L ↘️ 💧 It's estimated that this will avoid ~70 colorectal cancer cases in Denmark each year! ↘️

🎧 Today in Jyllands-Posten's podcast (in Danish 🇩🇰) I was interviewed about how dangerous nitrate in drinking water is. My main points below in the comments. jyllands-posten.dk/podcast/hvis...

Hvor farligt er nitrat i drikkevandet egentlig?
Drikkevandet fylder så meget i valgkampen, at vi taler om et decideret drikkevalg med heftig debat om forbud og frygt for nitrat i Nordjylland.

6 mg/L 🚰 The DK Ministry of the Environment had appointed an expert group, re-evaluating the drinking water standard for nitrate. Their recommendation: lower it from 50 mg/L to 6 mg/L! This is huge news and has potential for immense impact on water supply in Denmark, and especially public health!

New results from our water and health research group: - even very low arsenic exposure increased risk of type 1 diabetes in children. Great work by our research year student! Need for replication in other low-exposed populations www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We had a really cool paper on arsenic and diabetes under review there for weeks, just received the news they will no longer wait for reviewers' comments and it was withdrawn by the journal. Any good suggestions for alternatives (environmental epi, cool paper, exciting and novel results)?

Looks like one of the preeminent journals in my field, Environmental Health Perspectives, is shutting down - hopefully temporarily. I encourage authors with manuscripts under review there to preprint them ASAP if haven't done so already ehp.niehs.nih.gov/do/10.5555/b... 1/3

Ny forskning: Vi kan spare menneskeliv og milliarder med mindre nitrat i drikkevandet
Der er både menneskeliv at spare og en samfundsgevinst at hente, hvis vi sænker indholdet af nitrat i vores drikkevand.

So here we provide another great argument for reducing nitrate levels in the environment, not only will we avoid hundreds of colorectal cancer cases, save billions related to health-effects, but also protect our ecosystems which are under severe pressure: www.dr.dk/nyheder/poli...

Direct medical costs (~50 mio DKK) and especially indirect costs due to loss of life years (~2 billion DKK) outweigh heavily costs of reducing nitrate levels in drinking water - either by treatment or by land policy measures.

Using a detailed spatiotemporal exposure model, we calculated exposure to nitrate above ~ 4 mg/L in the entire population and estimated nitrate-attributable colorectal cancer cases: approx. 127 every year (95%CI: 44-214).
