More specifically, I need to take a risk on more games. This ratings graph kind of reads to me that I don't play games that I'm not 90% sure I'm going to enjoy, which isn't really aligned with my goal to be a Games Enthusiast™ who appreciates all kinds of games. I can't appreciate what I don't play!
bar graph of my personal ratings on Backlogged, with the bell curve centering around the 4 star range, implying a bias in the games I play being the ones I'm fairly certain I'll like.

Post a screenshot of your first 5 Steam purchases and let Bluesky judge you Everything checks out except these two Sonic games, I didn't even know I had them. Weird, was I a Sonic fanboy back in the day...? (TF2 hat was complimentary)

What about the bar from the Stardew Valley fishing minigame? Taking a mechanic a lot of people kind of dislike and making it central to a game could be fun.

The problems (and lessons) begin around round 3, as ascended devils take two hits to kill. This forces you to spends extra pieces in areas where you could really use them in other parts of the map where devils are more numerous or farther away.

The village survives at the end of a round when more villagers are remaining then devils. When you clear a round with all possible devils killed, you are awarded an extra villager placed randomly around the 8x10 grid (not 8x8 as I said in the previous post, whoops).
a clear grid with just the villagers remaining on the right side.

on the left side, there is a ROUND OVER title, below it a visual of the number of villages (2) being greater than the number of devils (0), denoting a successful round. below the visual it says: "THE TOWN SURVIVES THE ROUND. DEMON CLEAR BONUS! GET READY"

Okay, so pausing on Bug Hunter, let's talk about Devilition. Devilition is a game about exploding devils with chain reactions to save a village from destruction. You place various objects around an 8x8 grid to explode other objects in other places to kill all devils and spare all villagers.
a view of the game UI for the UFO 50's Devilition.

on the right side of the screen there is an 8x8 grid with two villages on it, one in the upper right region and one in lower left region, as well as eight devils that are strewn across the grid, mostly in the upper left region and the bottom right region.

on the left side of the screen there is various UI elements. there is a timer in the top left that shows the time elapsed since the beginning of the game. there is a pieces counter below the timer (currently 15 pieces). there is a piece explanation visual that shows how a piece explodes tiles relative to it when placed on the grid. finally, there is a DETONATE button that you press when you are either all out of pieces or when you are done places pieces.same as the left image, but with an arrangement of various pieces connecting all the devils to be exploded while leaving all the villagers spared.

Pretty simple, right? Wrong. This is a very hard game, as the gameplay evolves as the aliens do: any aliens you don't kill during a day evolve into an ascended form that, when killed, makes something bad happen, such as the grid space underneath the alien turning into a hole, spikes coming out, etc.
same screen shown in the previous post, but with two of the same alien type alive at the end of the day.a UI message after ending a day without killing a certain kind of bug: "THE BUG THREAT HAS EVOLVED: The Shreknid responds to attacks by firing deadly shards in 4 directions."new day with new aliens placed around the map, some of them spawned in as ascended forms.

Bug Hunter, on its surface, shares very little DNA with the game of chess. You are a bug hunter tasked with clearing a mining quarry on the Moon free of bugs. The goal of the game is to kill all the bugs required for each day and to survive 10 days. The game looks like this (alt text for more info):
a screenshot from UFO 50 of the game Bug Hunter. shown is an 5 x 5 grid with various objects on top of different grid tiles, such as a player avatar in the 4th tile from the left on the top row, various aliens across the grid tiles (4 in total), and multiple energy pellets (yellow cubes, 4 in total), strewn across the grid.

on either side of the grid is some UI. on the top lift there is a Job UI, showcasing a KILLS meter that shows how many aliens you've killed (currently 0), an ENERGY meter that shows how many energy pellets you've collected (currently 0), and a DAY counter that shows what day it is (DAY 1).

in the bottom of the screen there is an ACTION bar, that has 8 total slots for actions that can be used by the Player to move across the map or attack aliens.

in the bottom left corner there is an ACTION explanation, that showcases how the selected action can interact with the grid (move diagonally, attack in a straight line, etc.)

on the right side of the screen is a MODULE shop, which is a list of ACTIONS that can be purchased with gathered ENERGY. it's a vertical list with the ACTION module on the left side and the ENERGY cost on the right.

So recently I've developed a bit of an obsession with chess after a lifelong disinterest in the game and being surrounded by people who love to play it. Upon reflection, I'm putting the blame squarely on UFO 50, specifically Bug Hunter and Devilition.
