My article in the Conversation today with @tomdoig.bsky.social on prepping culture in Australia. It’s not all guns and bunkers.
theconversation.com
What is prepping – and how does it work in Australia?
Prepping in Australia is distinctive: less about guns and militias; more about food, water and community. While anti-government preppers are a problem, they’re rare.

FOR A STUDENT WHO USED AI TO WRITE A PAPER

Now I let it fall back
in the grasses.
I hear you. I know
this life is hard now.
I know your days are precious
on this earth.
But what are you trying
to be free of?
The living? The miraculous
task of it?
Love is for the ones who love the work.

This is an interesting article and patrimonialism is definitely part of the picture here. The work of sociologist Julia Adams builds on Weber in original and interesting ways and should definitely be on your reading lists. sociology.yale.edu/people/julia... #socialtheory

As @jvl.bsky.social pointed out, Harris ran a smart campaign. She was a solid candidate. Trump ran a disastrous campaign and is in clear decline. This was a clear choice. No matter who wins, half of voters either chose bigotry and authoritarianism, or had no problem with it. And that’s hard to take.

There’s a lot that the democrats could have done differently. Personally I would have liked them to go far left rather than try to court moderate voters. But I get the strategy; “maybe we can give people an out if they personally find Trump gross.” But the thing is,

At UOW in Wollongong on Oct 31, 1-3.30: launch of the UOW Academic Activist Incubator, by way of a tribute to David Graeber, with Cammi Webb-Cannon, Susan Engel, @jordanmck.bsky.social and me.
Flyer advertises an inaugural event for the The Academic Activist Incubator at UOW, Room 19-2072, Oct 31, 1-3.30. The Incubator is a network bringing together an interdisciplinary group of established and emerging scholars whose academic work in the humanities, creative arts, media and technology studies, policy, and social and natural sciences is primarily concerned with issues of justice/injustice, the imposition of power and the exercise of agency. It is open to all those who consider their academic work to be activist-, advocacy- or justice-oriented, taking place on a local or international scale. The launch event is a tribute to David Graeber, the anarchist and anthropologist.
