She had just stepped beyond the cluster of alder trees that lined the town square, keeping to the shadows to stay hidden, when it began to rain. She pulled the hood of her cloak up over her head, attempting to shield her loose golden hair from the heavy downpour that battered the ancient stone street in front of her, though it was no use. The rain easily soaked through her clothes, drenching her simple brown dress and muddying her boots as she rushed through the empty square.
Arina lifted a hand to shield her eyes as she turned down a narrow alley, her feet swift as she slipped between the two stone buildings. She ducked beneath the overhanging lip of the roof above, pressing close to the wall. The stones were cold even through her cloak, and despite the moisture dripping down the back of her neck, a shiver of anticipation jolted down her spine.
Her heart was pounding as she drew in a deep breath, inhaling the smoke-and-rain scent of the city once more. It was so close now that she could nearly taste it--the most precious thing in her world. The thing she would fight and kill for.
