"One of the big gaps in Canadian health care, is that mental health care is not guaranteed for trauma victims." — @joojitsulee.bsky.social (@utoronto.ca) tells @jeyantvo.bsky.social about the ripple effects gun violence can have on survivors, families, and communities. youtu.be/2h8cDZMIaRI?...

Acts of gun violence don't end when the shooting stops. @joojitsulee.bsky.social (@utoronto.ca) speaks with @jeyantvo.bsky.social about the lasting trauma for survivors and communities, and why victims in racialized neighbourhoods are often judged before they're understood. youtu.be/2h8cDZMIaRI?...

Filming a new ep of The Rundown w/ Jeyan Jeganathan to promote my new book, The Walking Wounded, a book on the long term health of gunshot victims in Philly. Even though the book is based on Philly, the findings shed light on gun violence & health care gaps in 🇨🇦, too. New ep out on Monday. 🫡

My newest in The Globe and Mail. On gun violence and the need for universal mental health care in 🇨🇦 . It’s paywalled, but here are some snippets. Hoping this stirs the conversation in Ottawa.

We need leaders in Ontario (and Canada) who really take climate change seriously. This is a live look at our province. Doug Ford has shown repeatedly that he is not the Premier for this moment.

Getting a revise & resubmit on a paper is an emotional roller coaster. There’s the exuberance when you first read the email saying you got an R&R. Then, the realization that peer reviewers are giving you mixed advice, followed by the doubt that you’re even competent enough to pull this off. 🫠

Today we get into Wacquant's Body & Soul in my Martial Arts class. I really like teaching this book. It's a fantastic way to get students thinking about the body and ethnography.

The rape academy is abhorrent and an obvious target for outrage. But the harder conversation is reflecting on a culture that normalizes these kinds of attitudes toward women’s bodies. This is one of the themes in my course about mass shootings and sadly it’s an evergreen topic.

I have students tepidly asking for extensions on assignments as family shelter in Iran. I have a hard time imagining any faculty saying no, but their reactions (of surprise & gratitude) when I grant these extensions are a reminder of the neoliberal university in action. We gotta do better.

Teaching Harel Shapira's work tomorrow in my gun violence course. And he is such a good writer. Reading his book, Waiting for José, is like a breezy walk in the park. Who are your favorite ethnographers to read for their style?

Riveting discussion today in my Soc of Gun Violence course about incels and how so many of Elliot Rodger’s ideas have found their way into the manosphere. It’s easy to point the finger at him and others who commit hateful violence, but harder to look at our culture at large. 🤔

The promo book jacket arrived. Both blurb writers described my new ethnography as ‘haunting’. Thanks to Javier and Randol for writing these kind blurbs. I think this means I’ve done my job conveying the horrific nature of gunshot injuries.

Lecturing about Columbine tomorrow and what we still get wrong about school shootings. It's been almost 27 years and there's still so many misunderstandings about massacres.

There’s no coming back if a POTUS ignores a Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling. Different branches of federal government exist to check and balance against tyranny. Regardless of your politics, this is a pivotal moment with immense downstream effects.

Some 🦋 friends don’t know this, but I have published work on serial homicide investigations and have been in a number of serial killer documentaries. Just got a Google notification that CTV is showing Catching a Serial Killer, which originally debuted on Oxygen and is now streaming on CTV. 🎥

Pretty cool reading a peer reviewed article by a former undergrad who is now a PhD candidate. You don't see them for years and then one day you come across their very helpful article. The teacher learning from the student. A true full circle. ☺️

One of my challenges as an academic is balancing the backlog of papers that are collecting dust on my hard drive with the pull of new ideas that appear in a flash of inspiration. This sabbatical has mostly been about catching up, but now I’m nerding out over a BJJ study that has me excited again.🙃

Major research universities are already bending the knee to Trump’s anti-DEI crusade, which just exposes how silly and overblown the “Marxist brainwashing camp” narrative really is. That was always a red herring. Academics know that universities are neoliberal corporations chasing funding.

There is an art to writing cover letters in response to academic reviewers (especially when they're harsh). It is one of the most sacred and challenging forms of scholarly combat. How many scholars feel like this was part of their training in their PhD program?

I recently read a Reddit post from a PhD candidate debating whether to attend their grandma’s funeral or their dissertation defense, and it perfectly encapsulates academia’s toxic grind culture to a T. The fact that this is even a question shows how academia can warp your priorities 😔

Revisiting Interaction Ritual Chains by Randall Collins (2004) and blown away by this passage. He really foresaw how addicting social media would become. Sabbatical is all about returning to my microsociological roots, and it feels like I'm coming home.

About 75% of firearms used in Canadian crimes originate in the U.S. The Orange dude loves talking about border enforcement but why aren’t leaders up here also talking about how lax U.S. gun laws fuel violence beyond its borders including in Canada? The costs of this violence are paid by taxpayers 🤔

Does anyone else completely forget about food when they’re deep in a writing or work session? I have home-cooked meals ready to go, but instead, I’m here eating a hastily made PB&J because I’ve gotta ride this productivity wave. ADHD folks, you get it 👀

There’s an understated elegance to standalone research articles. I got into book writing for awhile, and was convinced I had found my lane, but I am enjoying a pivot back to articles during sabbatical. It’s been awhile, but I am enjoying the challenge of figuring out “What is this a case of?”

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received? Mine was to write rough drafts quickly and not obsess over phrasing or copy editing mistakes. I still struggle with it, but it’s become a mantra I repeat to myself (and my grad students).

It’s striking how the Free Speech Movement began as a student-led protest to advance Civil Rights and critique U.S. imperialism in Vietnam… and now it’s morphed into a cultural rallying cry for using hateful words against marginalized groups. What a strange evolution.

All shootings are tragic. Yet U.S. news coverage tends to focus on mass shootings in middle-class schools, which represent a small fraction of annual firearm homicides. The grief we feel for children lost in these tragedies should extend to all children affected by gun violence 💔

I can’t help but notice how many resources were thrown into finding the suspected CEO shooter. The communities I’ve worked in—South Central LA, Philly—rarely see that kind of effort. But the pain of losing someone is the same everywhere. Just another reminder of the unequal justice system.
