Far out. 400 Euro for a monograph (even as Ebook) - new level of lunacy reached or is this tariffs?

Frank Cole Babbitt in 1936 forgot that when translating Plutarch's Greek into English, the English should be easier to read than the Greek!

no, you cannot rely on public domain translations from yesteryear where the translator was more concerned with his rhyming scheme than the meaning of the Greek. Monograph citing Athenaeus's Ἄρτεμιν, ἃ γυναικῶν μέγ᾿ ἔχει κράτος but relying on Yonge's 1854 translation. 🤦‍♂️

article i'm reading is full of bizarre typographical errors, but i'm quite taken with the idea that Paul taught Eor daily for two years, that could explain his later depressive state in the Poo books.

Um, every time i find a typo in a Brill volume or on the website i think, "so that's where all the money goes!" not on copy-editing anyway.

so apparently my work on the Gospel of Mark has been making big waves in the field of . . . high energy physics (to the uninitiated, if you are a published scholar you get a lot of this sort of spam, but usually for fake/predatory journals within some reach of your actual interests)

R U a "philological fundamentalist" or a "literary universalist"? I wish I'd read Matthew Hauge's Tour of Hell during my PhD, what hilarious terminology to sling at your methodological detractors!

"one of the most distinguished scholars in the field" - why, thank you!😊 more evidence of MDPI's seriousness as an academic publisher. (please note, I failed A-Level maths and no one has ever or would ever ask me to do their accounts)

love it when the last thing you read had you muttering grumpily about historical methodology and then the next thing you read was like it was reading your mind! straight soothing🔥 from Lynn LiDonnici, "The Images of Artemis Ephesia and Greco-Roman Worship," HTR 85:4 (1992)

OK so what is the current perspective on publishing with MDPI? This sort of thing does not feel remotely legitimate to me (for reference, no one has ever accused me of knowing anything about medieval Judaism)
Email text reads: Dear Dr. Robinson,
We contacted you on 25th of September, regarding a Special Issue entitled "Medieval Judaism and Jewish Diaspora: With an Emphasis on Crypto-Judaism", to be published in the journal Religions (ISSN 2077-1444, IF 0.8). Prof. Dr. Lúcia Helena Costigan and Dr. Gabriel Mordoch are serving as Guest Editors for this issue. Based on your expertise in this field, we think you could make an excellent contribution.

CFP ANZATS 2024
ANZATS Conference,
1-3 Jul 2024
Uniting College for Leadership and Theology, Adelaide
In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, global challenges, and socially divisive forces, the role of theology in fostering meaningful connections and nurturing thriving communities has become paramount. ANZATS 2024 seeks to explore the multifaceted dimensions of connection and community from theological perspectives with the hope that rigorous examination and constructive dialogue will deepen our understanding of how we can foster genuine connections and bridge divides. As a way of embodying the theme, the conference will also celebrate the connections to the place in which the conference is held by listening to keynote speakers who have special relationships to South Australia: Aunty Denise, an Adnyamathanha woman who will share her wisdom with us, and the scholars behind the Earth Bible project birthed right here in Adelaide!
Please note: There will be online access to a limited number

Jack Sasson's Jonah commentary was so good that it took three scholars to write the replacement !!! . . . (srsly tho, more commentaries should be team written - esp. in the major series)

this book cover is an excellent example of what to do if you want even the finest of scholars to be unable to correctly reference your volume and to make it near impossible for the average nerd to ever find the chapters within. WorldCat denied this book even existed in any library on the planet.
a very complex German book cover with multiple series volume numbers to coordinate
