With the celebs I’m finding it easier to ignore the issues with the game itself by believing that some of the decision tue celebs make have half an eye on the drama/ fun of it (e.g. don’t vote out REG because he’s going to make great TV!)

A detail which struck me was how comfortable he was talking about what was clearly dodgy while a Claridge’s waiter was at their table

Well said! For many years I have, in an amateur-ish but enthusiastic way, pondered the whole death of the artist thing. This gen-AI rise has really brought home that my deep belief is that all art is human to human communication

It’s (rightly) framed as transphobic because it does barely anything to further protect women (single sex spaces still exist) from male violence but it significantly increases the risk of male violence against trans women and trans men

I can’t quite get over how good this is! Surely something that could only have been made by a massive Columbo fan?

Woah you’re right, parenthood really is a lot like following English cricket. Right down to to the times when you worry an Australian dog does it better than any of us can

That’s right, it’s not a direct funding thing (like pupil premium) but the funding formula has a weighting based on EAL proportion so higher EAL = more funding. I hate to think how the Mail would twist that fact!

Actually I take that back slightly having re-read yours - the school would record them as being native English and German speakers. But on the census return would likely only submit them as being native German speakers.

As ever there’s nuance here but essentially yes, although it is fundamentally the parent that would decide what to tell the school is the child’s “first” language. The school would/can record all languages but only one would be submitted in the census

Jonny Saunders @jonnysaunders.bsky.social · 21/06/2025
This is hardly the biggest issue with the article but the school census only records one language per pupil. So all/most/some/none (who knows!) of the pupils might speak fluent English either bilingually or as an additional language

Oof, this was grim! But I thought you both did amazingly well to rise above the barrage of nonsense and nothingness from the other side and make some really compelling arguments

I forget where I read it but to paraphrase/mangle: LLMs are highly trained human pleasing machines. That’s it. That is almost literally how they are trained - the only thing they really “know” is what we have told them a good output looks like.

The hardest I’ve laughed when not influenced by other people was a Ted Lasso joke: Rebecca: “I spoke to the owner of the Sun” Ted: “YOU SPOKE TO GOD?!

Spot on. Alexander called this on uncloaked, it just turned it into a classic prisoners dilemma so that it will always just essentially be a series of coin flips until they’re down to 2

"'How are you?' These are the three most useless words in the world of communication." This compelling (but wrong/daft) assertion is based on #communication myth rather than how we actually talk 🧐 And asking "how are you" can even save lives... 🧵 1/15 [Bringing #EMCA threads to Bluesky!]

I might have got wires crossed here, but yes I totally agree that nuance is what is needed. The fear would be that the system is not equipped to provide the nuance, maybe? I guess I’m saying OfSted should judge (mainly) attendance improvement systems, not solely published attendance figures

Jonny Saunders @jonnysaunders.bsky.social · 29/10/2024
I’d say the argument would more along the lines of “some schools might *unfairly* not do very well” since it is a complex thing to evaluate. Would you trust the system to routinely produce statements like “this school has excellent systems for improving attendance but figures remain low”?

Always, *always* idea first! Data first is a recipe for one of two disasters: • You spend three days digging into the data and find there’s nothing interesting • You find a striking trend, and then a subject matter expert points out that it’s because the definitions changed
