An Edinburgh antiques dealer purchased this small chess piece and passed it down through his family.
Carved from walrus ivory and dated to the 13th century, the figure represents a “warder”—the medieval equivalent of a rook.
Bought for £5 in 1964. Sold for nearly $1 million in 2019
